The Harbor Freight ones aren't as good as these. I picked up some of the HF versions for a gift and I was kind of disappointed after using some like those in this post. The HF do zap, but they're not nearly as powerful and there's no satisfying ~SNAP~ when something hits it. I've intentionally touched both and the ones here give you a surprisingly good jolt. MUCH stronger than any static shock you've ever had. More like a spark plug wire or a mini stun gun. The Harbor Freight ones you can feel but no big deal. That's fortunate since in the design of the HF there's only a single grid of wires versus those here with two separated grids with another sandwiched between that you have to contact and it would be a lot easier to zap yourself. That also makes the grid kind of large for mosquitos and gnats, etc.
I can't believe that I actually just wrote a comparative review of hand-held tennis racket-type bug zappers. ; ) lol
These things are kinda fun and they do work pretty well for putting a hurt on local skeeters.

These are rechargeable, better than hunting for D batteries IMO

Not that you would want to make a special trip to get one of these, but they cost about $1.50 in Thailand. I live there part time and have had about 10 of these. The kind that you want to get is the rechargeable one with the D batteries. They have a more satisfying SNAP sound and a nice spark effect.
The physical size of battery doesn't dictate how much "Zap" there is. It's how much voltage step-up the circuitry inside does. A D-size battery might last a bit longer, though a good NiMH rechargeable AA would give a non-rechargeable D a run for its money. Personally I prefer the AA size since I can pop in rechargeables any time. No worrying about running out of D's (which I almost never have) or fumbling with those plastic AA -> C -> D adapters.
update -- received mine and boy do they have a wicked zap. Stuck my fingers between the mesh layers and it really smarted. I've worked around live AC electricity and gotten zapped so I'm used to jolts, and this racket is up there on the pain threshold.
I've had so much fun with this skeeter zapper. Definitely one of the best investments I've made. Going outside used to be daunting, swatting & slapping & wildly swinging at those bloodsucking lil devils. Spray helps but doesn't completely ward them off, and for quick runs outside sprays are too messy.
Now when I go outside I look forward to any oncoming mosquitoes. The zap is oh so satisfying, nothing like the smell of vaporized mosquito in the morning! On a given evening, whenever the mosquitoes are out in force, I can easily zap a hundred of them in half an hour. And I rarely get bit. It's like the smell of their charcoaled kin intimidates them.
This makes for a clean & easy killing of flies. Instead of fly guts squashed all over a surface, this leaves no residue and quickly kills them. It's funny, instead of being irritated by flying pests, you'll find hunting them down something to look forward to
