What's the point of telling us your target had or didn't have these cameras if you don't list the town?? Or are you just blatantly trying to be unhelpful?

No need to get all aggressive, I actually forgot to post it. Try living with a 16 month old baby that climbs tables in a matter of seconds. Anyways, the camera was at the Glen Burnie, MD target on Ritchie Highway.

can't find too many main stream places selling this camera....is this model retired or something?
How hot is this deal if I am able to find one? Should I jump on it?

This is my first post here....didn't know that was a requirement. I picked it up in Merced, CA zip 95348
Target at Tempe, AZ 85283 had two boxes (as of Monday evening) of the regular kit (without the extra lens) for 419.99 clearance. I wanted the bundle so I backed out.

The Target at The Bronx, NY had two boxes of the regular kit minus the lens for that same price $419 but since it wasn't the bundle I walked away.

I would say this deal is mild. I picked up the D40 almost two years ago in December and at that time it was $550 but the 55-200 was the VR lense which is about $50-$70 more than that standard 55-200 that this kit comes with. Once in a while you'll see a pretty good deal on a refurb package. A while ago there was a D60 package with the 18-135 lense for $430. There will probably be better deals around Christmas time, but it's hard to say as prices have actually gone up in the last year due to the weak dollar vs. the yen so really great deals might be a thing of the past. Typically you should invest your money in good lenses, the price of the 18-55 and the 55-200 haven't really gone down in the last two years, partly again due to the weak dollar, but bodies have still gone down a little in price as new models are always introduced. New lenses that completely replace a previous model are much less frequent.

D40 takes really good pictures, and to get this combo with the D3000 you have spend 750+. (oops, I just noticed its not a VR lens, so lower that price) Its not all about megapixels....Though the active D lighting on the D3000 seems to be pretty cool.
There are much more capable cameras at this price range, such as the Pentax K2000 for around $400 to $450 (link to thread). You can even do the Canon T1I Amazon printer rebate deal (link to thread), sell the printer on eBay, and get it all for $450 to $500. I agree that there are no other Nikon's at this price range, but if you're in the market for a Nikon D40, you should seriously evaluate why you want a 3 year old entry level camera when today's entry level cameras blow the D40 out of the water and cost about the same. Do some digging on www.dpreview.com and find the right camera for you.

Sears should have D40 and the 18-55mm for $399. They did a while back in Eastern Hills Transit Mall, Williamsville, NY. I don't know if you can get Target to price match it if Sears still sells it at that price

I went back today and the price went down to $349.99. They had one box. Tempting but I walked away.

The D40 is great if you want to save half the price of the d3000. But neither of the lenses are VR

Jebby,
The only cheaper one you are going to find is gray market, stolen or refurb.
$349 is the best price you will find on legit. But my guess is that you really aren't in the market for a D40.

Quite right that I'm not really seriously looking for another DSLR. we were at Target doing some errands and out of habit, I always pass by the camera/electronics section. My husband asked, "Don't you already have a camera?" He's right. I bought a Rebel XT for $150 last year and only had a chance to use it maybe twice. I haven't invested on any lenses so I can still switch to the Nikon so that was the tempting part. I guess I can sell my Rebel XT. I'll think about it... but for now, I offer it to other FW'ers out there.
the D40 has had a good run, I mean it came out what, like 4-5 years ago? Nothing wrong with that, I have one I use every weak but without the VR lenses I say these deal is mild.

No excuses allowed here on FW!!
We also want to know what time of day you arrived? Was it on a shelf or clearance table? Did you pick up that item only - or do other shopping while you were there? Was your check out person male or female?
just kidding!! Beware of tart, blunt, aggressive, demanding posters here on FW!! And welcome to FatWallet [e.g, "FW"]

The D40 was announced in November 2006 and probably started shipping a little after that. So that makes it less than 3 years now. Time flies, but not that fast. In the interim, there's been the D40x, the D60, and now the D3000/D5000. I've got about 7 lenses now and still have the D40 body. I don't think I've lost much money on lenses so far as they seem to be holding their value. I think I've got about 9k worth of pictures on my D40, one of these days I might pick up the D3000 or maybe even a D90 once the price drops. I was temped to pick up a D200 at one point for $600, but preferred the smaller size of the D40.

I bought a Rebel XT for $135 last year, around Black Friday. I sold it on eBay (as lightly used) recently for $300+; might as well toss yours on eBay, the market for them is still good. I replaced it with a Sony A200K from Target, which was ~$250 on clearance. I am very satisfied with my trade and extra cash in my pocket. I'll probably sell the Sony next year when I find some other deal

I just picked up the deal. It has dropped to $419 for dual lenses. Picked this up in 20783. There are more on the shelf.
