Starts 1/1/2010: We announced an exciting new partnership with Disney Parks this morning on Good Morning America. Disney Parks is recognizing families and individuals who volunteer their time to help improve communities by giving them a free one-day ticket to a Disney theme park.
Those in Canada, Puerto Rico or the United States who volunteer their time in service to a participating organization beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Disney theme park at either Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., or Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif.
I'm going to try to sign up as a community partner. It would be great to get "free" volunteers courtesy of Disney. [For our non-profit. We mostly help the homeless.]
I bet they will discontinue the Birthday celebration to pay for this.
I'm going soon on my kids BD and when i heard this i was cool .. i'll vol for a day and we can go free .... denied, starts in Jan .... i knew they would get me one way or the other ...

Probably. But I'll bet many of you didn't know that Disney will let you in free on your birthday. I was thrilled when I found out about that. It just so happens that I'll be in Orlando on my birthday so I get to use it!

OP, thank you for posting!
I think this is a good idea too. For those who already volunteer this is like a pat on the back and a thank you. For those don't, it is good incentive to start. It is more edifying than you may think. thanks OP. I'll be in Orlando in late November, so I'm missing the boat by about a month.

Can you use this to upgrade to an annual pass that day?

Oh nm! answered in the FAQ:
• May I upgrade my free one day ticket to an Annual Pass or multi-day ticket? Yes, you may upgrade the free ticket to another ticket type of greater value. However, the Guest is responsible for the incremental cost and the new ticket may only be used by the Guest.
This is a great way to recognize volunteerism. Granted many volunteers will not have the funds to make it to a Disney Park, but for those that live near or can get there it can be quite a Thank you!
I am registering our organization. Our teens who volunteer would love to spend a day at Disney. If I can combine free tickets with leveraged low cost hotels, we could possibly drive.

will most likely upgrade so wanted to figure out the cost for upgrade ($72 or $97 credit)1 day 1 park ticket (Which I'm sure you can pay $$ to upgrade).
BTW Yup, the Birthday tickets are gone from the site. No more free tickets on your B-Day.
I can't believe how quickly these are going. During the 20 minutes it took me to sign up and volunteer, the number of opportunities shrank dramatically. There were 24 volunteers needed for my event, then 12, then 9, then finally only 4 (which I grabbed). I have a feeling people are claiming their spaces, but when it comes down to it, there will be a bunch of no-shows.
I don't know if we'll even go to Disney, but at least it's a way to show my kids the value of service. And while you can't transfer you tickets to another person (sell them on eBay, etc.), you can donate them through the Disney website to Boys & Girls Clubs so that those kids get to experience a day at Disney. So if you do volunteer but don't make the trip, please don't let those tickets go to waste.
How many hours do you have to volunteer to qualify for the free Disneyland ticket? I know they say give a day get a day, but I wonder how many hours is in a day of volunteering. Some of the opportunities open to me in education for volunteering are on Saturdays for three hours.

Some of the opportunities open to me in education for volunteering are on Saturdays for three hours. The time commitment varies. Our volunteer event is two hours. All you have to do is complete the event, there is no specific hourly requirement.
And this volunteer opportunity doesn't sound like much effort. Geez, pay to watch a basketball game, get a free pass to Disneyland.

Yup. They should have done this while he was still with us.Someone is wearing rose colored glasses. Before he died he was the MOST DISLIKED entertainer in the US.
That didn't mean he didn't sell tickets, but he was still disliked.
We completed our volunteer event last Thursday. My kids loved it. It was a great way to get my kids excited about volunteerism.
Got the vouchers in email a couple of days ago. The terms & conditions state that you must redeem the vouchers in person at the park ticket window, and you must use your tickets on the same day that you redeem the vouchers. Nothing else indicates whether they can be upgraded in any way or not. I've always heard it's easy to upgrade tickets, as long as you do it while they're still active. It would be an especially awesome deal if you could upgrade to 7-day passes by paying the difference.
Someone must know whether this is possible. My wife is active on some Disney boards, and if I find the answer, I'll post it here.
May I upgrade my free one day ticket to an Annual Pass or multi-day ticket?
Yes, you may upgrade the free ticket to another ticket type of greater value within the applicable upgrade window. However, you are responsible for the incremental cost and the new ticket may only be used by you. No changes or refunds will be given. The value of the free ticket may not be used to combine or upgrade with a separate single or multi-day ticket.
May I use the value of the free one-day ticket toward the renewal of my Annual Pass or Passport?
Yes, the value of the free ticket may be used to renew your Annual Pass or Passport within the applicable renewal window. You are responsible for any additional costs owed and no change or refunds will be given.

My family and I completed our volunteering on Martin Luther King day. We really enjoyed it! We did outdoor clean up and the kids really got involved. Being as I am a volunteer at a different organization, it was wonderful to see my family get out there and get involved as well! We cannot wait to use our tickets, We plan to upgrade to a two day park hopper.
It can be upgraded and the response has been awesome. We have over 100 volunteers registered and I answer about 70 emails a day for this. They will probably run out of tickets and opportunities long before the program end date.
Have not had great luck on the volunteer end of things. First signed up for one of the groups that has volunteers make quilts for sick kids. They never responded to the email form, also went directly through their site. still no response. Gave up. Apparently they don't need my help. I tried again signing up as a hospice volunteer. Instant response and great communication but they require some medical tests prior to working with patients, which is fine and the tests are covered by heath insurance. My problem is I no longer have health insurance and can't afford to pay out of pocket for the testing. I wasn't really planning a disneyland trip and normally volunteer for a couple hours on saturdays at a soup kitchen, which isn't on the list but I was also looking for an additional opportunity for my family to participate in. It is unfortunate it isn't easier to just try to help.
