Too bad -- would be glad to give them the business except for that one missing all-important (for me) feature.
Thanks for the post.

Full disclosure, I work for TaxACT.
TaxACT 2009 has a pdf import feature that allows basic tax information to be imported from a pdf copy of returns prepared by competitors software.
I've used Tax Act for our taxes for the past couple of years (switched from TurboTax when it refused to work with Linux-based browsers) and I highly recommend it. It has a, idiot-proof, clean and simple user interface (that makes data entry easy and fast) and imports most of your information from year to year.
I also got this link (20% off preview) in email and have already signed up.

I am in a similar situation to Bill. I have been using the downloaded version of TaxACT for about 10 years. According to the FAQ "...the data from TaxACT software will not transfer to TaxACT Online. Your data can not be imported into TaxACT Online Free Federal Edition."
This does not make sense to me. I wonder if TaxACT 2009 online 2009 has a pdf import feature?

Cheers, Sy.
agreed been using online version for last 3 years and even and idiot like me can do it. THX OP used to be $20
aahhh shoot was hoping this discount was for the downloaded software version and not the online..anyway still a great deal if you like the online version...thanks
The inclusion of efile for both state and federal is what makes this a great value for me. Last year tried it for the first time. Used the free download version of TaxCut and verified against. The results were identical so I'm in again this year. You'd think the competition would notice the loss in marketshare and follow suit with the efile. Totally bogus to charge extra for that if you ask me.
But requiring the customer to enter their social security number at login is an incredibly boneheaded decision, and IMHO should be a nonstarter for anyone who truly cares about ID theft and the safety of their tax data. It certainly is for me. Too bad as I'm looking for an alternative after too many years of TurboTax and then TaxCut.
I've worked for an employer (very large company) that is actually stupid enough to do this on your very FIRST and ONLY login screen and I'm quite certain it's only a matter of time before they have a massive security breach with all SS numbers stolen, and the ensuing massive lawsuit, which in the case will be more than deserved.

This discount is good through December 31, 2009. I got the same email and have signed up (also been using TaxAct for several years now). I don't know what kind of deals they'll have in 2010 but maybe they'll go lower.
