The Radian 80 rear faces (RF) to 40 lbs, and forward faces (FF) to 80 lbs. It has great seat depth and should allow most children to RF to the limits of the seat, as recommended by the AAP. Speaking of RF, you should keep your child RF as long as possible. Your child is FIVE TIMES safer RF than FF up to age THREE! My son is 28 months old and RF, and he has tons of room to grow in the seat! He could make it RF to age four in this seat pretty easily.

The Sunshine Kids Radian car seats fit newborns (5 lbs and up.) very well. It is also an extremely narrow car seat and allows 3-across installations in most vehicles. When attempting a 3-across install, at least one Radian car seat is almost always required in order to puzzle out the installation!

We want to keep our kids RF for so long because their neck bones do not begin to ossify, or harden, until right around age three. Until then they are more like cartilage than bone, and can stretch up to two inches in a crash. The problem is that the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 of an inch. This is known as "internal decapitation."

Children who are turned FF too early are FIVE TIMES more likely to experience this than those RF. Why? Their heads are disproportionally heavy, and in a crash are thrown forward with great force. This can cause the neck bones to stretch far enough to snap the spinal column which can result in severe spinal cord injuries or even death.

Remember, when RF the seat is outgrown when either your child's weight reaches the maximum allowed by the seat (40 lbs in this case.), or when the top of their head is less than one inch from the top of the shell of the car seat. This applies to infant only bucket seats as well. Also remember that when RF the straps should be at, or below the shoulders, and when FF the straps should be at or above the shoulders.

The plastic belt positioning clip (RF or FF) should be at the "tickle spot" right at armpit level. And yes... This is true for newborns as well. Belly clips are BAD! I don't care if you think it looks uncomfortable. It.needs.to.be.there! It is a pre-crash positioning clip and is designed to position the harness in the middle of the ribcage which is a skeletal strong point.

I'll also point out that the national average for incorrectly installed car seats is 9 out of 10! So please visit www.safekids.org and find a CPST or car seat check near you with whom you can schedule a free car seat check. You can also visit www.car-seat.org if you have any further questions regarding car seats, car seat safety/installation, or general child passenger safety issues. I post under the same username there as well.

non related question to the post but how do you keep your child happy RF for so long, my son is 25 months and still RF but car rides are becoming more painful becuase he hates being in the car and I am wonder if he could see what was going on more he would be better. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It's just a phase that all kids go through. They want their independence and don't want to be confined. They'll get over it. I've found it's best to distract while getting them in the car, as well as telling them that Daddy needs to buckle them into their own special seat because he wants them to be safe because he loves them so much. Sometimes they're just in a foul mood and you just have to stick them in there.

FYI, check the Sunshine Kids site. This looks like the older model. They just released new models, with more colors and a new option so you don't have to use a lap belt through the hole in the bottom. I have this seat, with one of the new ones on the way. I don't care about the color, but the lap belt is the only hassle with changing it from car to car. Mind you, even with the older design I am able to change the seat in under 2 minutes. These are great car seats, and baby loves them.

The new SL (Super LATCH) Radians are indeed being introduced now. Super Latch allows you to use LATCH, provided you get a good install that way and that is not guaranteed, all the way to 80 lbs. This is of course contingent upon your owning a 2005 or later model vehicle, as LATCH in vehicles prior to the 2005 model year is NOT rated beyond 40 lbs! This is EXTREMELY important!!!!! Other than the new Super LATCH, there isn't any difference between the Radian 80 and the Radian 80SL.

wow, that's impressive, don't think most kids could tolerate RF for so long. Have you tried mounting a mirror or something to give him a view of outside, or the front, etc.?

Actually, rear facing kids see more of what's outside than you do, and for longer. They can see out the side windows and the back windows, and the stuff they see is in view for a lot longer than what you see whizzing by while facing forward. Try it yourself the next time you are in your vehicle. Have someone drive you around the block with you turned around in the seat. It's actually a pretty damned good view.

Mirrors can be dangerous because in an accident they can come loose and fly around the vehicle like a missile. However, there are some mirrors made of soft material and mylar that work great. I do a simple test. If I'm OK hitting myself on the head with the item really hard a couple of times without it hurting like hell, then I'm pretty good with said item being loose in the car.

I tried to order it online using 3 gift card but the following error kept coming up:
We're sorry, the Promo Code OCTOBER30 cannot be applied to the product(s) in your shopping bag. (This could be because the product is not eligible for discounts or the Promo Code is only valid on specified product(s).) Please check the offer for details. Or, simply Checkout.

It's been working, but they may have shut it down. Did you remember to use your Kohl's card as payment? That might have been the issue. Let me try it...

EDIT: OK, just tried it. It does work, but you must use a Kohl's credit card to get the discount.

Thanks OP.
I only have Kohls gift card and I think that makes the difference.
