For many people, including myself, fall offers the best weather suitable for camping. The leaves are changing, it's not too hot, not too cold, and the summer rush has pasted. So with this fresh in my mind I was searching hot deals for camping/ hiking supplies, and it seems that right now there really isn't a good selection of deals out there.
I am in the market for a new tent. My biggest requirements are weight/size and a rainfly that covers the entire tent, not just the top half. It also has to fit My girlfriend, myself, and a forty pound Australian cattle dog named Joey. Doing some research I came across this Siera Designs Lightning 2 Tent which looks like it will do the job well. The reviews are good and REI's price is right at $169.93 with free in-store pickup. This is the best price I can find on this tent by over $30.
Any feedback on this deal would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a better deal on a better tent or just a great camping deal in general please do share. There are plenty of us fatwallet tree huggers out there who appreciate it.

I've used this one by I prefer the REI Half Dome tent (about the same regular price as this one is on sale, often $120 or less when on sale). The Half Dome has a higher wall and seems a little more rain resistant with a heavier duty rain fly, but then again it also weighs about a pound more so that will be your call

Thanks for the input. I looked at that one as well, but as it is an REI tent I couldn't do a price comparison. My pack weight runs about 30lbs so I don't think the added pound will break me.
Looks like a solid deal. But 53" wide for 2 people and a dog? It would probably work, but I would go into an REI (or other store) with another person and get in the tent--or another tent of similar dimensions. Make sure it's not going to involve the dog sleeping on top of you or you up against the tent's walls.
And as a YMMV/B&M aside, there are pretty consistently screaming deals on like-new tents at the REI garage sales. Also, REI is currently running a 20% off deal for full-price items (code: FALLDEAL). It won't stack on this tent, but maybe there are others it'll help with.

That is a good idea. There is an REI in Madison, about 45 mins away. I might have make a day of it.

I've owned this tent for years. Realize its a backpackers tent, 2 medium sized people and a dog (unless its a small one) are going to be a tight squeeze. Its light weight, which makes it ideal for backpacking, not necessarily simply camping. You can get something much cheaper if you don't need the light weight and durability.

This is my dilemma. I am planning a three day two night trip on A.T. I have a three man Kelty, which has worked great but is a little on the heavy side. We plan on using shelters, so depending on how crowded the shelters are we may need to tent out. I was looking at using this tent as a back up if using a shelter is not an option.
This will be my first time bringing my dog on an overnight trip. She has done great on long day trips and campground camping, so I thought I would give it a try.
