Bought at Pearland Tx. It gets 3/5 stars on Sears website, and regularly priced at $34.99. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00948252000P?mv=rr I doubt this will replace your tape measure, but may be good for certain apps. I got a few so I will be doing product testing to see if this would be worthy enough to gift.
This unit apparently only uses the laser as a guide. The actual measurement is done sonically, which is far less accurate and prone to reflections, etc.
This type of tool is for rough measuring, like if you want to know the area of a room or length of walls while looking at a house that's for sale. I wouldn't use one for exact measurements and cuts.
I have one and used it just Friday to measure the house for an entire interior paint job. It's very quick for doing something like this. Though, you do have to watch it and not brainlessly write numbers down. For instance, sometimes an 11 foot room will read 33 feet. If you're measuring down a wall, sometimes it'll catch a reflection, so a 21 foot wall will become 15, or 8 foot. I tested it against a tape measure and when it does read correctly, it's pretty accurate. When it's off, it's way off. But, you just resample it again, or in a different spot and it works fine. It's minimum read is about 20"...that's kind of annoying.
It has a feature that auto calculates SQFT. So you measure the X and Y of a room and it tells you SQFT. It'll also do cubic foot...So if you're bored and want to measure your jail cell?? I dunno.
All in all, it's a handy tool that saved me probably over an hour on Friday. Though, I paid $8 for the entire kit, including laser level, tripod mound from Sears a year ago. (fatwallet dealio) I don't know if I'd make a special trip to pick this up, unless someone's birthday was coming up, or I was a contractor who was constantly measuring sq footage or high ceilings for job bids or something.
