linrick said:just got one. fry's web said 32, but the box said 16. Can someone who bought the drive copy the drive's Hitachi Model # here (from the disk label) so I can find out the platter density? I searched HGST site and didn't find anything that matches "Deskstar HD31000IDK/7K". Weird.
ds said:Just picked up the last one on the shelf. It it 32mb cache and this is the exact drive: Hitachi Deskstar E7K1000 Thanks for reporting back. So the drive's areal density is 244 Gb/in^2, which means it's a 3-platter. Not bad for the price paid.
I doubt it is the E7K1000, please post a real model number such as: HDS721010CLA332 That is not a serial number and all the drives should have the same exact model number. I am thinking it is probably the oldest 7K1000 from 2007 with 32meg cache (the 5-platter drive) and the slowest of the 3 other *7K1000 models.

Dude, its a $69 1tb hard drive - get over it! You want perfection - spend more money and get exactly want you want. Its a great deal for a reliable large hard drive.

I wouldn't buy a HITACHI hard drive. This is the only brand which gave me trouble. When IBM did not know how to fix the crash issue they sold the hard drive division to HITACHI.

Real intelligent post. How many hardware generations ago was that again ? As though anything in technology remains the same for a month, let alone 4 or 5 years. Buy whatever you like, but no need to thread crap. Even Seagate fumbled the ball on some of their 7200.11's last year.

Actually, I think your drive is HD31000IDK7/7k.
The point of asking for a model number is so that we can know what we are buying. slubfool is completely justified in asking for a model number, especially considering your model number (which is found in some external SimpleTech drives) differs from a previous members' claim of E7K1000. Hitachi has four main generations of 1TB drives, and it would be nice to verify which we're talking about: Deskstar 7K1000.C, Deskstar 7K1000.B, Deskstar E7K1000, Deskstar 7K1000.
