"There is a trick out there to make the printer think that the toner cartridge is actually full, which will extend your toner life...I put a piece of black electrical tape over the windows of the toner and have printed hundreds of extra pages out of a toner the printer had declared empty." Thanks pacmantech
Some people say print only 200-400 additional pages, since using all of the toner could damage the drum.
Use your St@ples $20 off $50 coupon for this or buy one on the Internet.

This is a good price for this printer. Cheap toner, overall good performance. Sits on my desk at work and I print dozens of pages a day.

Thanks pacmantech. I have added the method of extending the life of the cartridge toner to the OP.

The only issue I have with it is it slightly curves the pages as they print, but those papers naturally un-curl as they sit anyways.
All in all, great printer imo.
Did you change the printer settings to 'thin paper' ?
I tried it and they dont curl AS much, they still curl a bit though.

I think that is quite true with most smaller sized laser printers that don't have a straight pass-thru paper feeder. My HP-1200 does that same thing. I can feed the papers through right away though. Sometimes I will 'fan' them a bit first (slightly curl them the opposite direction to help straighten the paper.
We have had a MFC-7820N networked AIO brother laser for years, and it has proven to be a workhourse. Cheap toner refill kits are all over fleabay, and take less than 30 minutes. I used to jump on such deals, when the promotional printers had the same toner / drum, but this is no longer the case. In other words, you may want to buy another (now, or when the next deal comes around), as the toner and drum preplacements cost much more than the printer; use the extra printer in a trade-in promotion, donate it to a local school or your favorite charity.
OF COURSE no one using the "new green" fw background.. knows GREEN.. especially this old tech laser .. its extreme high electric usage will SURELY PUT per page costs WELL beyond what is irresponsibly quoted...

Brother has a unique way of dealing with waste toner. There are no waste hoppers ala HP and everyone else. Instead, it is "recycled" back from the drum - via charging - into the new toner supply. As the toner level depletes, the percentage of waste toner mixed in with the good toner increases. Running a higher percentage of waste toner will reduce the life of the drum, building up waste toner on the drums charging brushes. Being that the cost for a replacement drum is usually more than TWICE the cost of buying the entire printer/toner/drum at a typical Fat Wallet-er price, I would try and go easy on the drum.
Some will just stock up on cheap printers now and pillage the landfill-ready carcasses. But the rest of us should consider that the printer is well into its product life-cycle and likely wont be a scorable deal a year from now.
If I were in the market, I would top-off the under-filled toner cartridge when new, then maybe once more before looking for a replacement cart.
Great printer BTW, the Brother 2040's and 2140's have been great value printers.

Just bought a 20 Off 50 coupon and still haven't received it. Says its automatic delivery, so it shouldn't take 30 min? My location has one printer left hate when this happens. Any suggestions? I guess I could just purchase it and come back with the 20-50 coupon.

Thanks, checked the junk mail folder initially, just emailed the provider. We'll see what happens. I would have ordered online but couldn't find a $20 Off $50 Online. All of the coupons I found online are in-store only.

Just received a reply from the coupon provider. I impressed with the amazing service, I received a response in less than 1/2 hour along with my coupon. He stated that there is a delay so please be patient with the system and if you need to email the provider be professional in your email. Thanks again OP
I'm glad I spotted this thread which served as a reminder to check the toner level on the original cartridge. It was down to nothing at 1100 pages; the end of toner message came on at 698. Did the tape trick. An extra 400 pages, nice. Hopefully, no damage to the drum. A couple of test pages look fine. I had checked recently, and there was toner left, so maybe I caught it in time. The drum life still shows about 80%.
If you need to check toner/drum levels do the following: Control Panel->Printer->HL2140->right click Properties General Tab->Printing Preferences->Support Tab->Print Settings (this prints a sheet of paper with the levels and other info)
Not that easy to remember. If someone knows a shortcut, please chime in.

Could someone please point me in the right direction for the Staples 20 off 50 coupon? The ones i see say "Minimum purchase requirement of $50 must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies" but there is the instant 60 off coupon, so does that mean that is the correct coupon?
Man the 20 off of 50's online have dried up... If my Staples has this machine will it not work in store? My guess is when "humans" get involved the stacking becomes hit and miss?
I bought one of the wireless models for 50 bux on the last deal and sure could use another for my in college daughter.

How are you able to use CB?
He isnt. That was bad info.

Fantastic printer. I have been using it for a while now. The paper curling is slight and is resolved by gravity and not something I would consider worrying about.

One time only. And coupons with the first 5 numbers can be used only once in the same account.
Wondering ... Can we just pore any black toner inside. I've got an old/new Samsung toner here, i want to open it up and take to black gold. Anyone see any thing wrong with this? Thanks your input is appreciated.
