do not confuse this model with the newer archos 5 internet model. This is the old one that will not let you log on to internet hot spots such as Starbucks, McDonalds, and many municipal interent because this model does not support javascript. Also, reviews say the touch screen responce is slow. The newer archos 5 internet model uses Google's Android OS. The older one (this one) does not appear to be upgradable to android.
I have the 605 model. It has wifi but I can't get on to starbucks, mcdonalds, etc internet so I found myself not using it at all. And when I log on to my home wifi (I don't want to use archos wifi at home) pages load pretty slow. The only good thing I can say about these older models is the picture and resolution is stellar! 800x640 resolution(I believe) is much better than the latest iphone/itouch.
Oh, and Archos likes to rape their customers with plugins. The interent plugin cost me $30 and was worthless to me. Those lieing 'stards' won't even acknowlege the internet doesn't work at most hotspots and will take your money. If you inform them they will act like it's the first they've ever heard of it. And, be prepareed to pay about $20 for the video plug in, about $20 for the internet radio plug in and about $20 for the podcast plugin. At that point you can feel king for having all functionality, and an ass if you add up how much the thing has cost you so far.
I've barely used mine. I boot it up occasionally and have started to get 'firmware errors'. when I redo/reflash the firmware I though I had it fixed but I just saw another one last reboot. Who knows what will happen next.
I myself plan to get an 8 gig itouch to last me the next year and a half till something else pans out (hopefully with a 800 x 640 resolution like the archos, ironically)
I love mine. I can flawlessly stream all of my music from my computer or NAS to the player anywhere in my house. That feature alone was worth the money to me.
The 4.8" screen kills the touch.
I rarely use my touch now.
