The Mt. Baldy Chamber of Commerce has acquired a quantity of season passes to the Mt. Baldy Ski Area and they are giving them away on a first come first serve basis.
The offer will expire Oct. 31 or when the area opens for skiing or when they run out of passes.
There is a one-time activation fee of $49.95 to cover administrative costs.
Mt. Baldy offers all levels of skiing and boarding, from beginner to the steepest vertical drop in Southern California.
There are 26 runs spanning three mountains, covering 800 acres and a 2,100 vertical drop.
Season pass holders can use the ski lifts all season for free.
To obtain a free season pass or more information visit:
What a fraud: the Mt Baldy Chamber of Commerce is advertising a "free" pass, and they they want to charge you $50 in "activation fees". What a rip off.
Are there any lawayers on this forum? Is this even allowed, or is the Chamber of Commerce already in "false and deceptive advertising practices" territory?
Mount Baldy is absolutely TERRIBLE. That place is in need of serious safety/personnel changes. The lifts are rickety and the employees are SHADY! I am not exaggerating. Just go to Bear or Mt. High.

I am sorry that you feel our free season pass to ski Mt Baldy is a fraud. The activation fee is mentioned up front in all press releases and on the main information page of the website explicitly to prevent people from getting the wrong impression. It has not been our intention to hide the activation fee at all.
I think you will agree if you re-read one of our press releases at http://www.pr-inside.com/the-free-mt-baldy-ski-lift-r1526989.htm
or the page on our website at http://www.mtbaldychamber.com/promotions.lasso
Even at 49.95 we believe that is still an excellent offer. You could pay that with a discount ski lift ticket to Mt High or Big Bear for one day.
Our goal is to encourage people to Mt Baldy and we would defeat that purpose by starting out on the wrong foot with any form of deceptive practices.
All we can do is make the offer and hope that skiers and snowboarders in Southern California see the value.
Regards Keith Hunt President Mt Baldy Chamber of Commerce.

I live in Claremont--11 miles from the lifts--and this seems like a great deal. Shorter drive, and only a couple of uses and it would pay for itself. Thanks OP.
Five minutes later: Just called Mt Baldy. Note the fine print on the offer: You have to call up the day before to make a reservation (see link in OP, bullet 3: "Reservations must be made online only, at least 1 day prior to your visit.")
The guy on the phone even called it a "limited season pass". Even assuming they don't play games with the reservations, and I have no reason to believe they would, this cools the deal substantially for me. Just me, but I don't plan a day ahead to go skiing--I wake up that morning and decide it's nice and I will go.
Too bad this isn't made more clear--it was just clear enough on the link to have me question it.

Knowing a day in advance is not a huge sacrifice to hit the mountain all season for $50. I'm in!

I bought a "club" discount from them before. I had to pay $5 for each resevation. Do you know if they charge a fee for the resevation?
Making the resevation the day before is no big deal. In fact, you want to know the snow condition and weather before you go. They don't make snow and so a hot day with melting snow is no fun at all.

This is tempting, and I live in nor cal. But i do drive down to so cal (i.e. extension of mexico) quite frequently.
I went to Mt. Baldy once and i regretted ever going. I snowboard almost twice a month or more in the winter.
Mt. Baldy was the worst experience I have ever had. I paid for a ticket, got to the top. It was so windy I couldnt see more than 15 feet, this wasn't their fault. The runs are very short. They say "longest run" in so cal, but its bs. Its 1 run that goes from the top to the parking lot ungroomed double black diamond and you dont know how much snow pack there is so it can be dangerous. The drive up the baldy is horrendous. You think its shorter being closer, but the roads are bad and narrow so when it actually gets enough snow to ski, the roads are PACKED with minorities who want to play in the free snow. Don't get me wrong, i'm a minortiy too... but damn, its crazy.
I've never hated snowboarding, but that day, I DID!
Also, there are 2 runs that gets to a flat point, so you need to remove your snowboard and walk 100 feet... this sucks...
So, you pay the 50 and i'm sure you will use it once and never go again. So if you are paying $50 for the ticket, might as well go to bear or even Mt.High.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Sucks I read your post after I dropped the $100 on one for myself and the lady, try and cancel it I guess lots of bad reviews. Usually ski Mt High. As far as the Mexi thing goes, imagine growing up in central Mexico and then seeing all this crazy snow? I'm glad they get to enjoy it for free, too bad there aren't more accessible places in SoCal for everyone to participate...
the issue is, 2 seasons ago, mt. baldy didn't even get enough snow to open their lifts for more than i think 1 or 2 weeks. They dont make any snow so they fully rely on mother nature...

Teddibear
In the past we have had limited snow making capabilitie based on water supply. Please stay tuned for a major announcement on this matter in the next few days about a mammoth increase in our ability to make snow.

Mt Baldy has made a mammoth increase in snow making for the upcoming season. A new 9 million gallon reservoir has been installed and contains water.
This will drastically improve conditions for skiers and snowboarders and adds tremendous value to our free special season pass offer.

Sounds like a tempting offer, but the following restriction has me worried:
* Reservations are subject to availability but there will be at least 1000 for each weekday M-F, and at least 500 on weekends and holidays.
Like most people, I have to work during weekdays, and can only ski during weekends and holidays. With a limit of only 500, and who knows how many passes they are going to sell, I predict there is a very real possibility that all reservations will be "sold-out" every time I want to ski, which means $49.95 wasted.

Greendeal,
I understand your concerns. You can make a reservation as far in advance as you wish. Only one reservation is allowed at a time. This prevents people from making mass reservations and not showing up.
Once the reservation system is up and running you be notified by email.
FYI we have been notified that this special season pass offer will be withdrawn on October 28th. Although we do expect to make a similar offer in November it will not be at the same 49.95 activation fee.
Details of existing offer is here: http://www.mtbaldychamber.com/promotions.lasso?from=SLD
Hope this helps.

As a lifelong skier and someone who just discovered Baldy last season, I want to offer some advice. It's important to know what you're getting into before you ski Baldy. It will not be a fit for everyone, nor necessarily even for most people. The lifts are slow, rickety, two-seaters without safety bars. You will do most all of your skiing/boarding from the mid-mountain base, from where you can either take a lift to the left for beginner runs or right for expert. The distinction here is important, especially because there is nothing in between (i.e. intermediate trails). That said, I've skied all the popular areas south of Mammoth, and the expert side of Baldy is by far the best terrain offered. When there is enough natural snow (haven't ever seen the snow-making there), you'll find a great fall-line through the trees with a good collection of powder and well-formed bumps that you wouldn't think has any business in SoCal.
I skied there a half-dozen times last season and never paid full price. They offered $10 tickets at SkiDazzle and sell $35 tickets at Sports Authority and Sport Chalet. They all had the same reservation restriction, and I never once had any issues with it. I thought the mountain was an incredible bargain at those prices already, so I pounced on the $50 season pass as soon as I saw it.
Most important take-away here: you're not guaranteed to like Baldy. Snow Summit, Mt High, etc. have broader general appeal and wider cruisers for intermediate skiers/boarders. If challenging terrain is fun for you and you don't want to head to Mammoth, Baldy is an easy trip for even just a morning of skiing from LA, and this is the best ski deal I have seen in my life.

Just a warning... Last season I went twice. The first time my friend broke her wrist on the ice. The second time my board wedged on a piece of ice on a run and I busted my knee, left me on crutches for two weeks. Oh yea, they refused wrapping my knee so they wouldn't have to do paperwork. But I did get a snow mobile ride to the lift so I could ride it down to my car... 10 years of boarding without injury and then Baldy. Save your money for heavenly or mammoth where you can fall and not get a concussion.

i hear yah on that...
i was on a run and at a point it started to flatten out a little... the winds were so strong that it started to push me up the hill.
i must say it was the most oddest snowboard trip i have gone on... it could be a good mountain, but needs lots of work...

Really people? You're complaining?! Considering that just one full day lift ticket is $54 - $64 this is a GREAT deal. Even if you only used it ONCE it would pay for itself. After the snow drop we just had last week, my husband and I decided to go today. We had a BLAST! True, it may not be Bear or even Mt. High, but with their new snow making machines and mother nature helping out, it was close enough and for me I will gladly do without the hassle and expense of a tank of gas, travel time, and unfriendly staff that those places have. If any of you people that are complaining bought the $50 season passes and don't want them, just let me know. My husband and I will be more than happy to buy them from you!
