Kado said:No offense but $450 - $500 for a 14 inch single core 1.3GHz? I don't get it. This laptop is quite light, at 4.2 lb, is thin, at 0.9", and has ridiculous battery life (rated for 8 hours). Usually, laptops of this form factor cost a whole lot more. I don't think the 14" Thinkpads have been this thin since the T43, and I doubt they've ever had this kind of battery life.

laptop is sweet. picked it up at Amazon for 535 OTD and worth every penny. thin & light, 8+ hours of battery life,HDMI out, 320GB HDD, WebCam, 3GB RAM, and X4500 supports DXVA for h.264/avc (what sealed the deal for me). BTW, that ULV 1.3ghz processor is not as slow as one might think. It's built off Intel's Merom class, Has 2MB cache (3MB in the case of the SU3500 and a 100mhz speed bump), and is 5-10w TDP. More than capable for general purpose and vista runs fast plus Win7 upgrade is included when it hits stores. Just make sure to remove all the Acer bloatware.
I sold a unibody 2008 macbook just to pick up another one of these (other one is with wife)

yup... benefits of netbook w/o the crappy resolution, has larger screen, and much better processor (SUs smoke Atom), more RAM, etc. 14" is the sweet spot IMO, because inc. DVD Drive, a must for me cognizant of the DXVA capabilities.
Amazon followed suit and dropped price to $509 which is better than $499.99 + tax. Though if you can get $450, I say go for it!
It would be really nice if Amazon credited me the price difference as I just ordered a short while ago. They are a great company, but would be a lot better with their price change guarantee.
Hey OP, what happens if you refuse shipment from them? They credit you automatically or do they try to resend? I've always wondered...

Don't get confuse with Staples's as4810t. This is not a good deal. Staples B&M is still selling the as4810t-8480 for $499+tax which have faster cpu, Higher memory, and bigger hard drive. I'll take that deal over this any day.

Netbooks have their place though. I definitely appreciate mine for taking notes in class and when I'm traveling for only the weekend. I'm itching to pick one of these up though. My gf and I have been hooking up a laptop to her TV to watch steaming episodes online but something with HDMI would be soooo much better.
BTW your user name makes me think of F&F Tokyo Drift when the main character first gets to Japan and everyone is calling him a foreigner in Japanese

I talked to Amazon csr and they would not match the price. What they suggested is refuse the shipment and ask UPS/FedEx to return the package to sender. They will credit the amount back to your account after receiving the returned item.
After reading the posts here, I am having second thoughts if I would really like this laptop. Thanks for all the posts!
This particular Acer Aspire Timeline is a wonderfully designed machine with a single serious flaw.
The 4810T is sold with many different Intel CPUs. And in this case, the SU2700 (was the 723) is the very slowest offered. Even the SU2300 is noticeably faster, and newer.
Do not buy this computer without trying it in person. Barely usable with Vista. Might be acceptable using XP or System 7.
Look for an AS4810 with an Intel SU2300, SU3500, SU4100, SU7300 or an SU9xxx. Sometimes slower is OK, but the SU2700 matched with VISTA is not OK.

With SU2700 I know some people downgrade to XP just to get little better performance. Go with the 4810T-8484 (SU3500) if you can or downgrade to XP might be a option.

That's a factually incorrect statement. The difference between su2700 and su3500 is extremely negligible (only 100mhz bump and 1 extra MB cache). Now if you can get it for same price as this one (as someone suggest, I have yet to check Staples), then go for it. But Amazon wanted an extra hundred and that is NOT worth it. As far as su2300 the http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=42779, less cache, slower speed, but 2 cores... they seem to both be based on Penryn. I don't see the huge difference you seem to be referring to, except that there aren't any 4810s with SU2300 so might as well compare SU2700 to I7 Quad.
If you don't find it quick, never mind usable in Vista, you (or store) didn't remove the crapware that comes preinstalled and/or have the problem than many have talked about in relation to the some of the drivers or bios causing cpu spikes, that can be remedied with updates.
I have THIS computer runnning Vista Ultimate and for all general purposes, it runs as fast, if not faster than my wife's previous Vaio Core 2 Duo (1.73ghz) for which it replaced. She uses it for school, and plays some games on it (Plants vs Zombies anyone?!)... absolutely loves it, as do I for it it's HD playback capability lightness, etc. I would never think of downgrading to xp on it and am looking forward to 7!
I had my reservations too on the 1.3ghz wondering if it were up to the task of decoding h/x.264 because I wasn't for sure if the integrated graphics would support offload, but it does that find as well, up to 720p. But x4500 handles 1080p, no prob.
On a side note, if you live in U.S. good luck finding a 4810 with su9400 in it. I found one vendor a couple of weeks ago and the price was too obscene, definitely not worth it.

I see no 4810 whatsoever on Staples website so maybe ymmv from store to store? I'll def. check it out as that's an even sweeter deal.

the deal is in Staples B&M not Staples.com. Should be nationwide; called a local store and have them check surrounding area. The staff can transfer the unit to your local store.
