HERE is a link showing how to install Asterisk on this router.

I have 2 of these with DD_WRT installed. Solid.

Thanks for the link.

is the rebate trustable?

I did a rebate on one of these routers in August and just received the check a few days ago.

This router had a $20 rebate last November/December 2008. Do you think that $20 rebate will be repeated this year?

Well, in general if you have received the rebate for last years promo, then it is safe to send another one for this year. Even though it is a same router, the dates are year apart ! ! !

Good Luck.

I did not buy it last year and I did not send the rebate last year. The question was "would they offer a $20 rebate this year?".

Thanks, OP. Got it.

Buy.com has a similar deal right now, in case it goes out of stock at Newegg:

I know Asterisk in a VOIP switch. But in the context of the router, what can I use it for ? If I had different soft phones connect to it, sure they can then talk, but will outgoing PSTN work ? Will these phones connected to the Asterisk be reachable from outside the network ?

The router, in this context, acts as a server for Asterisk. Therefore, the Asterisk configurations you can program on a pc server running 24/7 can also be programmed on this router. I'm sure you can see the benefit of running a router vs. a pc as an asterisk server.

The memory limitations of this particular router may prohibit a GUI interface for Asterisk.

Your phones can be reached from outside thru VOIP (e.g. [Google Voice] --> [Gizmo5] --> [your asterisk server] --> [your phones], or [IPKall] --> [your phones] --> [your asterisk server] --> [your phones]).

Or, your phones can be reached from outside thru PSTN, in this case you will need FXO device like SPA3102 in between your PSTN and Asterisk.
[PSTN] --> [SPA3102] --> [your asterisk server] --> [your phones].

You can also run asterisk on a fonera (if you have one laying around- from the free days). Through the help of someone over on DSLR, I've got Google Voice integration on 2 free inbound voip numbers: sipgate (preferred) & G5. 2 Free voip lines with GV rocks on asterisk .

Running Paul Mark's GV dialer through perl on it is VERY painful though- so I created a GV login tool with curl- script run time is normally less than 5s.

I'd like to check if this thing can run tomato- I'd like to use it at my internet entry point.

Have you got this setup? If so, how did you resolve the echoing problems on the SPA3102?

It's a fine router and a great value if you have need of the USB port for networked printer or storage. It's been $20-$30 after rebate in the past though, so I'd hesitate before claiming a $10 rebate makes this HOT...

I can't afford landline, so my current setup is
[OOMA] --> [SPA3102] --> [trixbox/asterisk].

I set up SPA3102 years ago, and I don't remember whether I needed to tweak settings for echo cancellation or not. If you PM me your email, I will send you screenshots of my SPA3102 settings.

I think you might need to tweak some values (e.g. SPA to PSTN gain) and find out the best values for your setup.

Didn't notice this earlier, but OP, might want to take the SD referral link out of both links above.

alamedian: I was considering the SPA3102 but read of the echo issues (and someone also advised he wasn't able to fix his echo issues) so I went with an unlocked Lingo (iAN-02EX) adapter with POTS interface. Unfortunately, the POTS interface doesn't report back to * as a FXO port like the 3102 so I don't have control over it for * dialing plans- I have to setup rudimentary dialing plans in the Lingo device (match outbound tn's, etc). It works, but honestly, I'd like to be able to "control" everything from *.

I am happy to hear of success with the 3102... I might grab one to play around with. It was a mixed bag out there for the echo issue anyhow.

Old Thread w/Tomato links

PhDeez,
Check out the old thread from when I bought mine with links on how to set up Tomato & discussions about the different firmware versions. I never did set it up because it did what I needed straight out of the box. Very solid router - never a problem.

can you post the settings you use?
I'm configuring a couple of RTP300s, and would like to see other people's settings as a comparison.

Just a note since I just setup a Asus 500GPv2 as a NAS device (putting at my parents so I can backup critical documents/family photos off site) is that DD-WRT's support for large files, that is greater than 2GB is flaky at best. Using SCP it wouldn't work (the files would appear to copy but will not be visible to the file system on the router) and mounting the drive on a different system showed the files but they were corrupt. There are fixes including some versions of SAMBA but it does take some effort. In my case I was already zipping the data using AES-256 encryption to protect it while stored off-site so I just split my files in 1.5gb increments. On the bright side I was expecting something like 350 KBs througput based on what I read but am getting 730 KBs (it is CPU limited as top shows the processor maxed).

Just picked up this router from Newegg with the rebate. Finished upgrading the Asus 520gu to DD-WRT then to Tomato with USB support. Wireless NAS sweetness.
