Thank you original poster! I have been waiting for Costco to get these back in stock, but this price is just as good. I thought this was incredibly stupid when I first saw it, but after using one for a few weeks while visiting family I realized it is a really useful feature, particularly for one in the family who has a bad back and cannot step on the lift-lid type while bending over to throw something away without causing pain.
I've yet to find a nice quality trash can with slim rectangular proportions that has a well made and easily used step lifter ... they all bang the lid up violently if you step on them at normal speed so you have to step slowly (simple physics I guess...one inch pedal to raise twenty inches of lid arc). I wind up simply lifting the lid with my hand or propping it up permanently. The infrared sensor on this lid lift works really well and solves that issue...don't have to touch anything.
The two drawbacks were:
The opening is smaller than if the whole lid lifted so sometimes you run the danger of slopping your messy trash on the rim of the lid.
If you have a larger sized dog with a tail that wags high (husky, golden retriever, etc.) the tail is constantly setting off the infrared sensor.

The last time I saw them in a Costco they were over $50 with tax. And that was well over a year ago...haven't seen them in any Costco since, and I've been in eight different stores.

I saw them at discount store for something around $35, too.

The ones from Costco are different style than the one in OP, but similar concept/idea. I got mine from Costco 2+ years ago for ~$37
Since then, Costco has had a newer version of the one I picked up that also came with a small office-size 2.1 gallon sidekick, which is the reason for the increase in price since the initial product was available
Here is a recent thread that shows the Costco ones. I did happen to notice last week that my Costco did get a new stock of the 2-pack combo and had them for $49.99, but of course, YMMV on that
