Voice communication is not allowed - and I would raise hell with the flight attendant if anyone within earshot of me tried it. Can you image a plane full of people chatting nonstop on their phones / VoIP - talk about air rage...

I suggest you take an extra Xanax before your next flight... although I'd love to be there with my cell phone cam when you "raise hell" about someone trying out VOIP.
My flight is in January. I know you said the code expires end of Dec., is the code to register for access during flight [ie I can register with it now to be used in January], or will it already be expired by then?
Can I use Gogo to place a call with my cellular or VoIP phone?
Using cellular network services (voice or data) during the flight is not currently allowed by the FCC. When you can’t call, however, you can still Gogo! with most Internet applications, you can email, IM or just browse the web for information, so you don’t have to wait until you’re on the ground to keep in touch. Please note: VoIP services are also currently prohibited.

Skype wouldn't really be considered a cellular network service. Also something like AIM and MSN could be considered VOIP depending on how you use it.
Ran a speed test and got 200 kbps down and 100 kbps up. Not blazing but not dialup. They also sell a monthly pass for $30 and if I traveled a lot that would be a pretty good deal.
