For the first time in years, PC Treasures has finally put together a software bundle that isn't just a bunch of crappy, no-name, shareware type titles.

I have used it on several computers that I built(at cost)for friends and family.

Most of these folks were happy to only spend $29.99 and get the Corel X4 office package,
which sells for over $100 by itself. ($79.99 for the academic versiom)

One of the problems with building a PC from scratch, is the high price of adding windows OS and software programs.

(and before someone else says it, yes, I know that most commercial software applications have "freeware" alternatives. But not everyone wants the free alternatives)

While not each of these end user's will necessarily utilize each and every program in this "bundle", they were satisfied with the package as a whole. (Mainly, the $29.99 price tag).

It provided their basic software requirements for:

a word processor,
a spreadsheet,
presentations,

drawing, photos, web page maker,etc.

While the package is aimed at small biz users, several of the programs can be used by lots of non-business types also.

I'll admit, I didn't read into all the descriptions, but there is not a single application I would put on a 'system' I'd build. In fact, I'd consider 100% of them to be junk/bloatware.

Laplink used to be awesome. haven't used it in about a decade though. These days you can get a lot of high quality freeware from the likes of google and download.com, so i'm not sure if any of this stuff people would use.

While there are a lot of applications which I would consider "fillers", there are a handfull of true values, if you need them. The Act! 2009 alone would be enough to justify this.

Great post. The Corel software is worth the money alone. Although some programs can be downloaded for free, it is always nice to have the program provided to you in one easy place so that the time saved looking for the same can be worth the price when it is as low as this offering.

Thanks OP for the post. I think there are several programs that are worth the price. I especially agree with
AuctionHugh "If the roboform is the registered pro version, this alone pays for the whole package." I've used it for years.

Green for you OP. IF anyone needs ACT or Peachtree (which also comes from Sage so may play nicer with ACT than say, QuickBooks ?)this is a great deal. Also, as mentioned above, Nolo products are pretty high quality and you dont' get any of them for $29 on their own.

The roboform is the standard/free.

They sort of sneakily avoided telling which version it was in their writeup or cover label.

There are at least 2 * > PDF solutions out there. (just shows up as a generic print driver).
Then there's OpenOffice.

For my own use, I would consider using freeware options.
When building a PC for friends and/or family, if a end user has not at least heard of the software program that will come with the PC, then they have a tendency to assume it is junk.
(and I don't have time to spend hours educating them on why freeware can be as good as paid software solutions)
Also, with well-known software, I can direct them to B&N or Amazon.com and tell them to get a dummies guide (or two).

Compression utilities:
Any particulars on what features are missing from Stuffit deluxe; that are resident on 7-zip?
I'm using stuffit deluxe on a couple of my own pc's and haven't had any reason to switch to 7-zip, or another program.

My biggest consideration are the clients that are getting these computers, which I load with this $29.99 bundle.
They recognize winzip, though some think stuffit is still a mac-only application.
I mention 7-zip and they usually respond," 7 what"?

PDF:
PDF solutions ARE plentiful, that is true. If you just want to simply add PDF creation capabilities.

I have personally used Corel wordperfect X4 and it's PDF capabilities are incorporated within all of their office suite programs, vs being an add-on.
Before I started adding/installing office X4 for clients, it would sometimes take a couple/few tries at loading a PDF pkg that the end user wanted/liked. Simply easier for me to have it as part of all of the office components,
rather than as an add-on.

Office suites:
Open office is an alternative. Just my own experience, that with importing MS office files, I've had less problems [and better conversions] with office X4, vs open office.
There is potential for a lot of YMMV situations, since everyone uses their office differently and everyone will have different file conversions to atempt.
(unless file conversion testing were to be done on a fixed set of doc's, spreadsheepts, database, etc).

Org chart:
This version allows for up to 100 people, so it can easily be used beyond the dog, cat, and canary.
(Add grandma and gramps to the org tree. Aunt maybell and uncle louie too).

Apples vs oranges:
It's not hard to choose a few apps from this $29.99 bundle and generically state that there are "freeware alternatives"
(which I agree would be a true statement).
Since this software is being sold as a "system builder's bundle", it is about giving PC buyers a list of software choices and finding out what they want.

They may want:Paid only, freeware only , or a mixture.

When it is only $29.99 vs free, many actually opt for the $29.99 add-on.

Apples vs apples:
If someone really wanted to compare a "freeware bundle" to this $29.99 bundle, then a similar
freeware "bundle" of programs/Apps then I would consider directing them to would be:

1) It's free.

I haven't used the craptastic Stuffit since long ago in OS 9 world. They were a decent company with some real IP once upon a time, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StuffIt

But they stagnated in the market and really don't do much any more.

7-zip and Izarc both support 7z format, which if you're going for size hands down beats anything else. Don't worry about what programs other people use. "I'm sending you a zip file" and let them figure it out from there. If they want to spend the money on WinZip, fine. Like you said "7-zip" is just going to confuse them.

Serif products are absolutely great! These definitely are not just 'fillers'. These are top notch programs rated highly in the UK - just haven't caught on marketwise in the US yet. These are very powerful programs. I have used Corel products for years, and these are easily comparable to them. Their new versions (X4) just came out, but the versions included are the ones from this year (not 3-4 years ago like some software does). Web Plus is a decent web application program worth looking into as well.
