Dedicated the whole day to finding a Nikon D40 couldn't score with the Target deal as all the local Targets were sold out. When I thought all hope was lost I went to the Sears in Lacey, Wa and they had one model left for $399. I called a few other stores and come to find out they were on closeout for $349. The manager price-matched the other store and now I have a brand new D40!
For $349 it's kickbutt deal on beginner to mid-level camera... being phased out in favor of the new Nikon D3000.
I was about to get a D40 (after waiting half a year for it to drop from 350 to 240) only for them not to find the battery door, lens, warranty, etc etc.
I am interested in looking at Sony Alpha 200 as a backup camera with my XSi.
I found one for 227 here in Orange Park FL. It was missing manual and CD. The wife was not too happy about thay so back it went! It should be at the store as I type this.

If you want a "backup" camera it is probably best to stay within the same mount so that you can share lenses and accessories between them. I'd suggest you stick with Canon. Unless you're only using kit lenses? But then what are you doing that you need to invest in a backup, but not in additional lenses? (BTW this is coming from someone who prefers Sony's Alpha system to Canon or Nikon...)
