As a daily user of Microsoft Office, I find Word and PowerPoint to be better products. Don't get me wrong, I do have OpenOffice installed on one of my PCs because I didn't want to buy another license for just this one machine. However, when I have a paper or a major project I prefer using Microsoft Office.

I would not quite place the value of his contribution at $0. While not everyone may not be a big fan of OOo, it actually works for a lot of people and might be a better deal for someone who really needs to save every penny. And believe it or not, some people don't even know that such a free office suite that is comparable to MS Office exists!
If you are a student, also double-check what your college or university offers. The university that I go to offers free versions (or a small price if you want physical media) of the latest versions of MS Office/Windows for free. Plus, the CS department gives you access to MSDNAA if you take any CS courses, where you can get a wider assortment of Microsoft software...Windows 7 was available there a month or so ago!

OP, I don't see where the Digital download is free! what state etc... did you use. Prices vary depending on location.
Though I am a quite an open source fan and user I agree that these threads are not the place for such stuff. That said check with you IT department at work many of them support MS products at home. I got a copy of Office Enterprise for $19.95 from MS (I had to get the link from my IT department). They also had Visio and Project for the same price if need. Also remember that Office 2007 is where MS drastically changed the interface. I know many people love it but after 18 months of using it, I don't like it. I am used to it but I actually prefer OpenOffice which is more like the classic Office interface. I use both products regularly and OpenOffice does everything I need but reliably exchange complex documents with Word/Excel/PowerPoint. I keep one copy of Office around just for that but for all my at home docs that I don't exchange with anybody I use OO.

manifesto said: great deal, but come on ppl arent you tired of getting raped by microsoft? switch to Ubuntu ffs!! It's free
Yeah, and very practical for the masses. My 80 year old grandmother can load Windows applications. Do you think she's going to figure out how to do that on Linux? It's great for some people, but until they become much more user friendly, all Linux distros are going to come in a very distant third.
Why are people so worried about being "raped" by microsoft. You get pretty good software AND your money goes to "Bill Gates". He will just end up donating it to a worthwhile cause. No one can spend that much money. The rest of the profits go to the shareholders of Microsoft which includes things like retirement funds etc.
How are you getting raped.
OK this post is off topic but so was the idiotic comment to switch to Ubuntu when the post is clearly about getting a cheap copy of MS Office.

RANT FOLLOWS.
The next time someone posts a good deal on a Panasonic product should we harass the OP for not mentioning the competing Toshiba product. I know that Sony TV's are more expensive but many people prefer Sony and want a good deal on a Sony product. What is the point of pointing out that Samsung sells a cheaper product. Next time some says there is a good deal on an iPod I should post a deal which points out that you can get a crappy no name MP3 player (or a Sansa) for a cheaper price. Then we can all argue over the features and how we get raped by Steve Jobs.
Stick to the deals people. This is the "HOT DEALS" forum!
It may not be available to your school, it may be available for $100, and it may even be available for $19.xx. It is not available to mine. It = Win7 Ultimate.

You don't need an .edu address but you do need to be enrolled in one of the named institutions. You will need to upload an image of your student identification. This could be a better deal for K-12 families with only one student in the household and no need for additional licenses. If you need to install this on more than one machine with use for the entire household then it may be best to get one of the "Home" licenses when they come on sale. Last time I checked the "home" version was good for installtion on 3 machines. I suspect this license is good for only one machine.
Last I checked, all this software was cheaper on Bittorrent. ha!
Why is everyone on FW so anti-bittorrent?

check with your company (if working) to see if you get this for a discount....I got mine via the Home Use program at work for $20.00.they shipped me a DVD
Actually, Open Office, as nice as it is, doesn't do everything you might need.
For example, for years, the Open Office people have been dithering about putting in compatibility for Microsoft Works files. I started using Works since it was the software that came installed on my current machine. I then tried to read the files in Open Office. No go.
I then found there is a version called Go-Oo, which has some features that regular Open Office doesn't have, like reading .wks files. I haven't tried it yet.
There's an old article concerning some of the problems with version 2 of OO, including the fact it was very buggy and it had much slower load times for spreadsheets. I don't know if they fixed the problems in the current version.

I don't know what field you are in, but another option for Windows 7 is to join the IEEE. I joined for $15 (student membership) and that was one of the pieces of software available for (free) download. Some pieces of Office are on there too such as MS Access. Anyway, you can search for the thread and read about it.
As a side note, after installing Windows 7 and using it for a couple of weeks, I went back to Vista. Yes, W7 is pretty and some things are easier to do but the one big thing that killed it for me is that it required me to buy new programs. For example, Norton Antivirus would not work (and I had just bought it). My Nero DVD burning software would not work so I could longer burn DVDs. And my printer did not have a driver available so it did not work. When I tried to run a program that was not compatible a message would come up saying to click here for more information. When I clicked there, it would take me to the manufacturer's website and would prompt me to purchase a new version. One other weird thing, every time I tried to look at a PDF on a website I could not view it. I'm not complaining or anything but I'm just making you aware that it might not be all that you think it is so early in the game. Maybe I'll re-try W7 in another year and see how it's coming along!

So, this is good for K-12?
I didn't know there was a lot of demand by kindergarten kids for Office...I guess they're cataloging their crayons into Excel and doing powerpoints of different ways to make things out of clay.
Or whatever kids do in kindergarten these days...that's the stuff I used to do.
"home use program". If your company joined this Microsoft program, it allows you to buy microsoft office 2007 (2008 for Mac) for only $9.99 from digital river (CD will cost more). As long as you work for the company, you are licensed to use it.

I'm using 7 and have both Norton and Nero installed and running fine. I didn't buy new versions of either, so I'm not sure what version you have. If it ran on Vista it should run fine on 7.
