Feel free to red me on this, but it's 2009. How can an 802.11G router for $44 be a hot deal? I know.. it can run DD-WRT and tomato and all that great stuff, but by now you should be able to get an N router for only a few bucks more capable of doing that too!

Come on guys

My sister's roommates had either this router or another Linksys/Cisco with exactly the same design. Dropped signal at least once every two hours. I asked them to update the firmware but this did not resolve the issue. In any event, the problem seems to have disappeared now that I had them turn the router upside-down and put a fan on it.

Maybe this was an isolated problem, but I wouldn't be able to recommend it based on my experiences with the design alone.

same price, but has a bonus 10$ rebate.

This is also dd-wrt capable, has external antenna, 16mb ram and can handle the regular version of dd-wrt, also has usb

Not sure what you mean by "regular version of dd-wrt" but Asus WL-520gu can only takes mini version of dd-wrt because it only has 2 MB of flash ROM. There are way to load the mega version to it but there is not the "regular" version.

just curious... why does everyone rave about dd-wrt?? The firmware that the linksys router comes with does probably everything that most people need....... What added feature does dd-wrt add that people use????

Depends on the amount of memory the router has, there are a lot of things you can do with DD-WRT. One popular app/service is VPN.

umm, the wl-520GC has 2 MB flash and only takes the mini version. the wl-520gu has 4 Mb flash

you can confirm it there if you wish.

The asus is a better deal IMO, it has a xmit power of 220mw and an external antenna. I have not been a fan of linksys hardware honestly, had more problems with our old linksys than any of my asus routers

You are right. How can I mixed the two up? I have the 520gu for over a year and am happy with it except I can find a version (dd-wrt or tomato) that supports both VPN and USB.

Not sure about dd-wrt (tho I liked its web interface way better than linksys) but I enjoy Tomato firmware:
Tomato is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware for Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers. It features a new easy to use GUI, a new bandwidth usage monitor, more advanced QOS and access restrictions, enables new wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes, raises the limits on maximum connections for P2P, allows you to run your custom scripts or telnet/ssh in and do all sorts of things like re-program the SES/AOSS button, adds wireless site survey to see your wifi neighbors, and more.

QoS is nice, and the GUI is pretty snappy. Bandwidth monitor is cool, especially if you are limited. On both, you can adjust the transmission power of the wireless signal as well. Many little tools and toys to tweak your router. It's more about having control I think. Being able to customize and tweak things. Makes a good learning experience too

And a USB port. All in a dd-wrt capable package.

It looks great.

Now to find a hot deal with all these features, plus dual-band N.

Any recommendations?

Also remember dd-wrt allows multiple ways to use the router as a full repeater or extender.
