My local Costco in Phoenix has this deal until 11/21. The regular price is 799.99 there is a manufacturer's discount of $100. Though I have not seen any reviews for D3000 yet, it seems better than D40, at least, on paper. If that holds good in reality this is a great price.
I picked up the D3000 back during Double Cash Back days. It is as small as the D40, but has a bigger screen, more focus points and 10mp. I didn't need anything fancy so I'm pretty happy with it so far. Some early reviews say it has poor noise at ISO levels above 800, and I would agree, although I just set it to stay below 400 and haven't had any issues. My logic was to save money on the body and spend a little more on lenses and a good flash (I got the SB-600). The lenses and flash will last a long time, but the body's seem to upgrade every other year or so. It's been a while since I've used an SLR so I figured I get something low cost to get back into it and then upgrade when I'm ready.

Costco also has the D5000 kit at $899.99 which includes body, 18-55mmVR+55-200mmVR lenses, carrying case and sd card. Probably it's worthy to throw $200 more to get D5000 according to some reviews.
