True, but this will do the job at a lot lesser price than any version of the new ones. After all, saving money is the Fat Wallet way!

also, 1st gen supports port multiplier on the esata port, whereas the new ones do not. if you've got 8 or more drives you want to run off WHS, this unit along with a 4 or 5 bay esata enclosure, is a good deal.
I love my ex470 with a $25 upgrade to 2GB of RAM. I use it to stream digital media, pictures, and music through out the house. I installed Playon on it so that I could watch hulu and other internet shows on my tvs. Not to mention it's getting the 3.0 software in December which will give it much of the functionality of the newer models.
I have used the server everyday since I got it a couple of years ago. I use it to remotely access my home computers, remotely access my digital media and files, and my family uses it to remotely view our pictures.
Don't short change this little device. It's already amazing and the 3.0 software update will put it over the top especially for that price. If you do decide to pick it up, aside from tinkering I think I would just let it sit until the 3.0 software upgrade, that way you won't have to go back in and redo all the settings you've just done. Just my opinion though.

I read some where else that HP won't allow user to update the software to newer version with older HW (like this EX470)?

You two are both right. First HP said they wouldn't upgrade the oldest units to the newest software because of hardware limitations. But because of a huge outcry by early adopters on several home server forums, HP reversed their decision but said the software wouldn't be available till fall which then became December. It is great that HP listened to their customers on this one.
If you check out those links you'll see them refer to the update as v2.5 but somewhere along the way they decided to release 3.0 instead. Even better.
I purchased this model from Circuit City on their last day before shutting down because I had GC I had to use and this seem to be only thing worth buying even though I have no idea the full capability of it.
Can someone explain in laymens terms, exactly what this is capable of? If I have this would I still need to purchase WDTV Live to stream media to TV?
I had ordered at the higher price when you first posted this deal. Received my 470 today, logged onto fatwallet and saw the updated lower price and your new promo code. I called Newegg for a price adjustment to the new price which they did without any hassle. Saved another $22 that I'll use toward the RAM upgrade to 2GB. Great service, that's why I spend so much money at Newegg!
Okay, reading all of the reviews, checking out MediaSmartServer.net, I'm sold. Ordering one with 2GB and 1TB Samsung drive.

Really interested in this....
The one I got is probably not HP re-certified. I cannot even log into the server. It could be returned item. I ended up reinstall the system using the CDROM!
Can someone answer this, I have multiple pcs in the house but only 1 that I store all the media on. Is the big advantage to this the networkability of this? I like to stream video and music to the tv using the 360 or the linksys media center extender. I want to buy this in true fatwallet spirit... I just need a reason to.

Yes, you can access and stream content from multiple computers. I stream DVDs to my kids room via an xbox. We can also watch movies in our living room via HTPC at the same time.
Additionally,
1) By default, the Mediasmart software will automatically backup any computer that loads the connector software. 2) Remote access files away from home via a web portal (such as your music, photos, documents). 3) You can enable folder duplication (if you have more than one drive installed). Any data stored in these folders are saved on two different hard drivers. 4) You can also have personal folders with different levels of access (Full, Read, None) for each user/family member.
As mentioned before, the greatest benefit to the EX470 is to upgrade the memory to 2GB. This will not void your warranty.
I would definitely get an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) as there is a great add-on called grid junction that will manage your UPS.
The Esata port will only recognize up to 4 bays in an external enclosure. The 3rd generation will recognize 5 bays. The 2nd generation 1 bay.
These are relatively quiet but they do generate some heat especially if you packed it full of drives. If you plan on doing video, prepare to start buying drives.
FYI, I am also using WD 1.0 and 1.5TB drives as well as Samsung 1.5TB drives. I can not wait until the 2TB drives fall in price.

So you are saying the 1st gen (470/75) actually can recognize more bays than the second gen?
And you're ready to buy more drives, but you aren't feeling the need to upgrade to the 490x series? Sounds like it handles all the streaming I'll need -- that's good news. Thanks!

I believe that's correct due to the eSata multiplier.

read sites chip in this is upgradable beyond a sempron as is the ram beyond stock 512mb. i did the ram to 2gb didnt touch the processor. no issues streaming nonhd movies music to xmbc ps3 or client pcs.
got this on a former deal..did a 2GB upgrade, and upgraded the proc to a BE2350, which runs a bit hot...a BE2300 is probably the best proc upgrade you'll get for dual core (35w amd proc are no longer available), or a LE1640 single core (you cannot go higher than a 45w proc since it's passively cooled)...
i currently have the stock 500Gb (seagate), plus a wd 1tb green and a samsung 1.5tb ecogreen....highly recommend the sammy because it runs the coolest by far
HD streaming works just fine with the sempron and the ram upgrade, as long as you're over cat5/6....i can easily stream 720p over a coax nim/powerline but 1080p chokes outside of cat5 in my home....I haven't tried wireless-n ...streaming to a ps3 and popcorn hour
you can install the 2.5 upgrade on it, until HP finally releases the 3.0...

Has anyone tried this unit with more than 4Tb of total storage? The HP datasheet says that the max supported capacity is 4Tb but also that storage is limited only by the number of hard drive bays (4) and USB ports (4), so I'm curious whether it would work if I plug in 4 2Tb drives.

you can install the 2.5 upgrade on it, until HP finally releases the 3.0...out of curiousity, if you don't transcode to a ps3 or popcorn hour, can this handle direct 1080p streaming to vlc or windows media player over the network? if not, how much juice do you need? would the 2.2ghz celeron in the ex490 cut it?
Not sure who jumped on this deal, but my unit was used. Someone even wrote in the manual checking the steps off, even wrote the password within it, LOL. However, doing the install it was clean it seemed. It's working well for now, let's see how it runs.
