Haven't tried this myself, but the words from the street say that it needs to be thickly applied & spread on the CPU or it won't work properly. And "it's difficult to work with, requires patience and diligence." I can almost imagine that the thermal compound has a play-dough kind of characteristic.

you never thickly apply thermal paste on a cpu. That's the way to make it not work properly
