Standalone BitTorrent BT Client + UPNP USB/NAS/FTP/SAMBA/Printer Sharing Network LAN Server for $40.35 (Free Shipping)

This standalone USB NAS can serve as NAS, FTP Server, SAMBA and print server. Not to mention it has a BT Download client which means that you don't have to turn on your computer 24/7 to handle download jobs. It consumes very little power compare to turning on a PC.

The only bad thing is that Deal Extreme shipping is slow and it may take couple weeks to reach you.

There are expert developed a cutomized firmware to make this unit even more powerful. Of course you have to deal with the risk of bricking the unit just as you flash a router with DD-WRT firmware.
Snake OS for the NAS

I did flash to this custom firmware and it is great. It has "Tranmission" client (Linux app) built in. Pretty cool.

some mediocre reviews... Wonder if its worth the risk. I guess if you're going to flash it for sure it would be worth it.

eBay is full of these devices, what is so special in this deal?
Unknown manufacturer, risky to buy, I believe, although I have attempts.

Hi,

The photos for this item show a non-US / Euro 220V type power plug.

Reading the forum entries for this item also confirm it is a two-prong UK-style plug.

Also, there seem to be a lot of posts regarding this unit's OS hanging - which kills any torrent downloads in progress.

Thanks.

I bought and hacked one of these to install Snake OS. It's not very fast, but it's small, quiet, and low-powered. Instead of running a desktop PC 24/7, I run this as a printer/media/torrent/file server at home. It does come with a UK style round plug, so order one of these $0.95 adapters with it:

My tomtom GPS AC adapter also fits this and has the correct power output. You, too, may have a power adapter lying around that fits.

i would be nervous about DealExtreme items. I have ordered from the before, and quality is at time mediocre at best. Some items from them are great, but others do not last a month. I would rather trust my data to a brand that I trust.

I know most of you are skeptical about the device. Anyway, I plug in a USB flash drives that is lying around and wala it is a "Green" download manager for me. And I can also use it as print server to share my printer. For the price, I have no complaint. And with the fun of customized OS, I think this is a good bet.

Does this have an external IP address that would allow access from across internet? It would be pretty sweet to direct torrent files to this unit from work.

I believe it supports Dynamic DNS Service. I flashed mine with customized firmware so it has "Transmission" client. Transmission is using port 9091. So, if you configure your router for pointing port 9091 (port forwarding) to the unit, then I would say it should fulfill what you want.

I meant exactly the same devices for the same price at eBay. For example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-LAN-NETWORK-STORAGE-NAS-PRINT-SERVER-BT-...

I am not saying that device either good or bad, I just questioned how much it is a deal.

I am considering to buy this anyhow, among other options.

Since this is a BitTorrent downloader as well, does it allow for ipfilter or PeerGuardian to filter out unwanted traffic?

DX is not what it used to be. The both the service and product quality dropped significantly. The last two times I ordered from them, There was 3 weeks delay before they were shipped; took a month to arrive. And the laser sight I purchased was DOA. Only after paying return shipping out of my own pocket and many emails to remind them about the refund before they reluctantly sent me the refund. Simply too much hassle to deal with them in my recent experience.
