I don't know much about these, but from what little research I've done, it seems to just irritate the dogs, you are exaggerating a lot; it's NOT like punching them in the face. Ok I am totally joking. I love my doggy and she is fairly well behaved but I could definitely use this on my girlfriend's dog.
And for the record again...do not punch your dog.

The Amazon one is the one i got some time ago. It really didn't work at all to my dogs but works its magic to one of my landlord's dogs. I don't know if it has anything to do with breeds but I'd guess it just differs when it comes to different dogs. So think twice and make sure u'll be able to return it if it doesn't work.
