I can't speak for this brand/model, but I thought the same. I had a cheap one that I used for a couple years until it went dead. I cracked it open, changed out the lithium cell and the only thing that comes up on the LCD is the letter T. I'm guessing there's some kind of calibration done at the factory on the way out that gets lost on power loss.
