a better version will be on sale at Staples from oct 25th onwards. for $379.. - go to Staples.com and take a "sneak" look into next week's ad. that laptop will have dual core AMD athlon L310 (other sites show it as TK-42). I think its 2GHz. There was a thread regarding this somewhere on FW today.
That is a 15.6" laptop, not a 15". I would love to find a brand new 15" besides a toughbook/itronix. Having a wide screen is wasted on most of my uses.

Incorrect, the AMD Athlon X2 L310 processor has two cores running at 1.2GHz and 1MB L2 Cache.

Didn't see that thread- thanks for the heads up.
I bought the Staple Compaq notebook this morning for my daughter. It is a better deal than the Bestbuy Acer one since it has the newest 45nm Athlon II M300 dual core 2Ghz CPU. It has a larger hard-disk, a build-in webcam and ATI 4200 graphics chip. I have to say, personally, I like Acer better than HP/Compaq in general. But, Staple has a better deal this week.

sorry- it was 349... i am looking at too many websites finding these laptops and comparing specs and the numbers are all coming out wrong. As Lane03 corrected me above, the L310 laptop at Staples is 1.2ghz , not 2ghz... but I think its still a great deal!

this is true -- couldnt jump on this deal as its not available online ... sold only in stores now.
Staples as well as BB is offering a Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade Boxed Retail version for $49.99 with a pc purchase.
Staples also giving $60 off an HP wireless printer, coupons are in the book they give you when you buy, to use on the current purchase.
The Staples ad for the 25th, they also have a 10% off on one item, not good for pc's But it may work on the printer or software if you buy that when you buy a pc, 10% coupon says not good with other coupons but it is worth a try. Same thing about a month ago, some cashiers took the 10% some did not.

thats true... I think the 10% is pretty good deal if it works on printer. BTW, do we have to buy with the coupons from the book the same day? Or can i use them later?

Hello, was looking for a laptop as a gift and have been through a ton of websites! You guys seem to know what your talking about, is the one being sold at Staples the best I can find at that price? With all the things (sorry not don't know as much as I should about computers) or programs that she would need? Like the windows and the spam blockers? Or do I have to purchase all those things seperately? Appreciate help and thanks in advance!

The coupon for the $70 off of W7 and $60 off an HP wireless is for purchase with a PC and would have to be the same receipt.

Next weeks Acer for $349.99 is ok, no cam if that matters. This weeks Compaq for with cam $379.xx after $30 rebate w would be considered by many a better deal. Not just because it has a cam.
Spam blocker would be part of an eMail service, no need to buy.

Acer Aspire Laptop with AMD Athlon™ Single-Core Processor TF-20 1.6Ghz with 667Mhz FSB
similar spec'ed laptop has been as low as $279.99
That was with Vista Basic and 2GB RAM. I got one and upgraded to Windows 7.
I think this is equally good deal if not better.
Cons - no Cam, No MIC, cheap overall. Pros - cheap desktop replacement, large screen, keypad
Request - I am looking for upgrading the CPU to dual core. Any tips, deals, tutorials, links are welcome

This past summer Consumer Reports suggested that people could put together a "free" suite of security software using the free version of Avira antivirus (Free-AV), Windows Defender (built into Vista, maybe it's in Windows 7 as well, I don't know) and Spamfighter standard. As an alternative, the magazine felt the best "pay" suite was Eset Smart Security, which it ranked higher than McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, etc.
I'm using Free-AV on this computer, which also has Vista. I've only been using Vista for a month or two so I'm not familiar with Windows Defender. Often, when you buy a computer, it comes with a trial period of something, often Norton.
You might want to check the library for CR. It's the June, 2009 issue. Other outfits rank security software, and they'll all have different opinions, but I keep seeing Avira and Eset NOD near the top on almost every survey I've seen lately.
I had two acer laptops( AMD Processors) and ithey have an issue of over heating when used for longer periods...so take this into consideration while choosing an Acer

828337 Going to get a ton of them in an hour....
ALso, with a pc buy, Windows 7 upgrade for $50 (use on your old pc) and $60 off an HP wireless printer
The Staples deal is absolutely awesome and the notebook is excellent....so far
I turned in a old IBM laptop that didn't work and got a $75 credit.
Make sure it powers on, has Win XP or Vista and the screen is not damaged and you get the $75 credit.
Someone wrote that it has a webcam, but I don't think that is the case, but regardless I paid $275 plus taxes for a laptop with 3GB RAM and 250GB hard drive.
3 years ago I paid $1,400 for something like that
I love how computers get cheaper and cheaper.

Is this only in the store? I'm not seeing this model on the website.

On line yes, but when stock is out sometimes they will indicate that, others they remove the item. Keep checking, as I do. I got 4 online and a few in store, but the problem now is the store is out of the W7 upgrade offer. Not good for me, I buy both and sell both.
RichVohra said: Guys/Gals,....I love how computers get cheaper and cheaper. Cheaper and cheaper to me means cheaper build, highly disposable, and ready for recycling in one year. In other words, they are not made to last so get ready to buy another one for less money in a year.

Replaced my TF-20 with TL-60. It's really easy; just time consuming because you have to take the whole thing apart just to get to the CPU. Well worth it though; made watching youtube HD go from non-existent to sufficient.
I just want anyone considering an Acer to learn about their tech support:
Acer's customer support is web/email only from India. The way they help you fix a problem is ask you to restore the computer to the original state. If neither that or new drivers solve the problem, they'll send this email to you:
"Since this issue involves advanced troubleshooting, we fall short of resources with which we could better diagnose and resolve it for you. However Acer technicians are bound to support its customers with the removal or installation of any hardware or software shipped across with Acer machines. But they are not trained on all the advanced features of the software or hardware Acer sells.
Because this calls up on a higher level of expertise the advance troubleshooting, we only have support over the phone on these issues and it is chargeable. You may avail this support on 1. 800-237-6483 at a rate of $2.95 per minute with the slots 30 minutes ($59.99), 90 minutes ($129.99), or 15 issues ($199.99) and the validity will be 1 year which can be billed to a credit card."
So they'll charge you for tech support even though it's under warranty. This is my first hand experience.
Also beware, with all the CPU discussion on different models it could get confusing. This model has the Athlon TF-20 in it, which has a Passmark score just a bit higher than an old Pentium-4 2.4GHz desktop processor. (Sony actually put one of those in a notebook in 2002!)
The only common processors these days that are less powerful are the Atom chipsets in netbooks - and they're optimized for long battery life, which this doesn't have.
EDIT: I also see bimbot's mention above of doing a (drop-in?) replacement of the TF-20 with a TL-60 - which apparently required a lot of disassembly! bimbot, do you have any links to pictures or anything? This might be a fun hack and might lead to decent performance too...
