thats EXACTLY what it says on the Amazon specs page

People are not very interested in this? Is this a Win 7 starter? Not sure.

charliwg said: People are not very interested in this? Is this a Win 7 starter? Not sure.
the Amazon web site specs says it is win xp under the tech specs, then scroll down further and it says it is win 7 starter, i called their number and the rep asked for the ASIN or sku number and he said it was win 7 yet HP website says win xp, i told him i would not pay for a return fee if win 7 was not installed, he assured me it was win 7, so it is a tossup as far as i am concerned and have not pulled the plug to order yet, any ohers out there who have ordered yet and not knowing for sure what the OS is

If it is Win 7, I will buy 2. It worth it, right?

charliwg said: If it is Win 7, I will buy 2. It worth it, right?

Do you need 2 broadband accts. I think I would rather use wifi

i dont think a broadband acct. is required after purchase, only if one wants or needs an acct. in order to use the feature, it just makes it more appealing if one wants to resell at a later date i think

yeah that's the "problem" with built in broadband cards, you need a separate contracts for each of them. and if you buy a contract they usually give you the card for free, so value of this deal is questionalble. If i were to get broadband internet i'd go for "mifi" device (a stand alone broadband receiver/wifi router combo) or pay-as-you go solution like the one from virgin mobile, no contract, a wide variety of options - like 250mb a month for $20

Anyone know if the GOBI can be removed from this easily? Any idea on form factor?

does this feature, i.e., the broadband mean that one cannot use this as a wireless unit, say like a regular netbook and thank u

Wow, great offer on the VM.

Having an internal card is worth it IMHO, no dongles hanging off to break, or lose. downside being you cant just move it from one computer to another so easily.

Contracts are also not really an issue, IF you can put in a few hours of reading... I did and I use verizon impulse on for my internal Broadband card... costs only $100 a year. It took a little work but howardforums explained it easy enough.

ATT prepaid has/had $20 a month web... I had it for a while but verizon worked much faster for me so I dropped it.

just got it today. Windows XP.

I bought an AT&T Novatel aircard many years ago when 3G first came out, then I upgraded it to a Sierra Wireless Aircard 881 simply because it was available and free. The 881 card came with a new SIM card that I guess required activation, but all I did was take the SIM card out of the Novatel, put it in the Aircard 881, and it worked fine. I got tired of the Aircard sticking out of the side of the laptop (I take it everywhere I go), so I looked for a laptop with built-in 3G and found a refurbished HP 2510p with a built-in AT&T HSDPA broadband card. I took the SIM card out of the Aircard, put it in the 2510p SIM slot, and it worked without any problems. I later got a Dell Mini 9 with a built-in 3G slot and antennas, found the correct 3G card on eBay, took the SIM from the 2510p and put it in the Dell, and it works fine too. So at least for AT&T non-Gobi service, this shows that the broadband account is tied to the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, not the hardware. Verizon broadband is different because the there is no removeable SIM card and the subscriber identity info is tied to the built-in card. I don't know if you can move the EVDO service from one laptop to another just by entering the subscriber info.

I assume that a laptop with a built-in Gobi broadband card has no SIM card slot. Can anyone let us know if this one has a SIM card slot? Thanks.

By the way, the Gobi card looks just like a normal PCI-E card. Click here for Gobi pics. We also started a Gobi discussion a while back if you're interested.

Got this message from Amazon when I asked them to work with HP to deliver my copy of Windows 7.

No, I don't believe there's a SIM card slot. Gobi is software-defined radio and everything is done in software. This data sheet (PDF) for the HP un2400, the broadband module on this laptop, makes no mention of a SIM card slot.

Can you describe what's involved with the $100 Verizon Impulse plan?

From what I can tell, the $100/year of data usage isn't exactly that. It's $100 worth of data usage, that expires in a year. Does that sound correct to you?

If so, how many gigs does $100 buy?

The Verizon $100 "plan" I refer to is just a $100(anything over $100 is good for 1year) top up card. AFAIK verizon inpulse doesnt offer a plan designed for data cards.. in fact data cards and smartphones are specifically prohibited from Inpulse prepaid. But it doesnt mean that you cant do it, its just against their terms.

basically you take a prepaid phone you can pick up for $20 at WalMart that has $10 airtime activate it, then you assign that number and account to your data card, create a dialup connection on your PC, and you get mobile broadband.

That explanation is intentionally vague, search and read up on Howardforums to get the details, I wont post them here as I dont want the FW effect to kill my deal.

According inpulse website, for a phone, web access will cost 99 cents a day, with no data limit specified (I keep it under 5 gigs a month to not attract attention to myself). Since your data card isn't a phone, and you arent using their proxy you MAY be pleasantly surprised to find what the actual rate being charged is. But prepare to pay up to $.99 a day. You'll know your rate the first time you use the web and log off, then view your online account activity. The $10 initial airtime should lasts 60-90 days before it expires giving you plenty of time to decide if you want to add a $15 30 day card or go all in and buy a $100 card good for a year.

Disclaimer: Verizon inpulse does not support data cards, and Since this method is against their terms, at worst be prepared for them to cancel and take the balance on your account. The good news is, since you arent in a signed contract with them they cant send you a $20,000 data bill. So dont try this on a postpay account. I have had mine up and active for about a year now, and my usage charges have not changed since day 1, but YMMV.

Thanks so much for getting me started.
