...and others...

Good deal. I have one of these. These also run XP without a problem.

Great price on the 24" iMac for $999 as well

ahh very good time to pick up a previous generation (maybe even the last with swappable batteries)

What's the sweet spot in terms of price/bang for buck on the MacBook iterations?

Just so you know: The new iMacs, which come with faster processors, start at $1,149 with the educational discount, $1,199 without it. They also include wireless keyboards and mouses. And the mouses are different from the way they used to be.

See The Demo

That said, these are very tempting. I'll probably go for one of these. Thanks to the Intel processors, they are not going to be out of date for a few years.

The question is: Bigger Screen? More hard drive space? More memory? Lots of weird combinations being offered.

I hear you. I'm about to spring for one of the Macbooks and am hoping that I get lucky with additional BTO's that might have been added to the refurb (have gotten fluke upgrades in the past).

I'd go with a bigger screen. HDD and memory can be upgraded later for cheap if you do it yourself, but screen can not.

Also, don't forget the free printer

That's what I was thinking. I've upgraded both my memory and hard drive on my MacBook – and it was surprisingly easy. I'm hoping it's the same with these Imacs. The other thing, of course, that can't be upgraded is the processor speed.

That said, this one for $999 with a 24-inch screen and a 2.8 ghz processor looks pretty damn good.

And as I was typing this all the sub-$1,000 iMacs are now sold out.

I've been a 12-yr veteran of using windows OS and suddenly feel the urge to go mac.
looking at the 13" macbook pro refurbs.
do these come with snow leopard? will they run a VM of xp pro ok?
currently, the only thing i have at home is an asus netbook 1000HE and after using it for 4 months, i'm ready to dump it and get something bigger.

I wouldn't worry too much unless you are in a hurry. I have been watching these for a few months. The $749 - $899 imacs pop in and out every now and then - you just need to keep an eye out. We need two new computers for work and I am not worried about getting a couple at this price point.

No Iphones ;(

Go to AT&T Wireless - you will probably find some refurbs there. However, the cost of the iPhone itself (8GB models, refurb or even new) is less than one month of service - and you must sign a 24 month contract...

They generally ship with the OS that was on them when they were new. In the MacBook Pro's case, that would be Leopard (the snowless one). Sometimes you get lucky and the person that packed the refurb will have slipped a OEM disc of the latest OS, but I wouldn't count on it.

They should run VM machines fine. The MacBooks would have an issue with graphics because of their more limited card (and even though, only on more demanding renders), but the MacBook Pros are top notch VM machines.

You decide this right after Windows 7 comes out?

You didn't read the terms & conditions document: "Configure-to-order and refurbished versions of these Apple computers qualify for this offer."

Bumped...Apple just loaded up a BUNCH of MacBooks (all gens including the black ones), iMacs and more. Beats the hell out of BF, but you gotta be fast.
