Best Buy is currently offering a free Retail Upgrade (any version) of Windows 7 for $39.99. (You get to keep your copy)

The price rings up as $199.99 and then you must purchase the Geek Squad installation. They have 2 SKUs: 39.99 for Geek Squad installation and a second for Free Windows 7 that MUST be scanned.

When processing the transaction, the price of Windows 7 Upgrade drops to $0.00 and you only pay for the OS installation.

This will last until 1/1/2010.

Update: Forgot to add. They say the laptop/desktop must be purchased within 1 year of release, but there is no Proof of Purchase required.

OP deal is for Win 7 qualifying PC s

LINK

If you purchased your qualifying (Windows 7) PC at Best Buy or BestBuy.com, you can pick up your upgrade discs at Best Buy when you have the upgrade installed by Geek Squad for $39.99.* It's great because you don't have to wait to get your Windows 7 upgrade in the mail, and Geek Squad saves you time and stress by upgrading your PC for you.

Here's what you need to do:

Bring in your qualifying PC and Best Buy proof of purchase to any Geek Squad location after October 22. A Geek Squad agent will install your Windows 7 upgrade for $39.99 and make sure you have all the necessary updates.
If you have a qualifying PC, but you did not buy it at Best Buy or BestBuy.com, you can still request your free Windows 7 upgrade from your PC's manufacturer.

Do you have an older PC that does not qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 7? No problem! Bring your Windows Vista or Windows XP machine into Best Buy, and Geek Squad will set you up. We'll even offer you this sweet deal:
Purchase any Windows 7 upgrade at regular price, have it installed by the Geek Squad for $39.99, and save $25 instantly!**

----------------------------------------
NOTE: The update site does not say that you are required to upgrade from similar vista versions to the corresponding 7 version (ie, vista home premium to 7 home premium, vista professional to 7 professional, etc). The major benefit of this deal is that you can ask them to install the windows 7 ULTIMATE upgrade for $40. It may be a YMMV, but I do know that some stores will do so if you ask.

Wonder if you can talk them into just handing you the disk? It is less work for them.

Sounds like the computer has to have been purchased from Best Buy?

I wouldn't want them touching my computer. Maybe if they paid ME $40.. Nah. Ha ha!

Wouldn't trust them installing anything on my computer. Let alone paying them $40 bucks to do it.

Huge YMMV and having Geek Squad touch your computer? They would need to pay me for that privilege. You cannot trust them w/ your data and they turn around and try to sell you products you don't need and charge an arm & a leg to do so.

So...the 'deal' is...you don't have to wait, and they get $40 that they wouldn't ordinarily have gotten. Sounds like BB gets the green end of the stick, and everyone else gets the brown...

Some PCs qualify for a free Windows 7 upgrade. You have a qualifying PC if:
You purchased your PC between June 26, 2009 and January 30, 2010, and
It's running Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Ultimate.
If you purchased your qualifying PC at Best Buy or BestBuy.com, you can pick up your upgrade discs at Best Buy when you have the upgrade installed by Geek Squad for $39.99.*

I think I overheard the geek squad agents mention that ANY of the upgrade discs are free with installation. The major benefit in this would be to choose the Windows 7 ULTIMATE upgrade disc, since it doesn't make any mention of corresponding Vista to 7 upgrade disc. The ultimate version definitely would be a good deal at $40, imo. It may be a ymmv on being able to change the upgrade disc choice, but I did see the geeksquad in westbury, ny do it.

The past two times I have purchased a laptop on-sale at Best Buy those Geek Squad people have already gotten their grubby hands on them. Then they want to charge an extra $40 for optimizing it... Well what if you don't want/need that crap??? Sorry bub, we don't have any that we haven't laid our grubby/greedy mofo hands on...

I thought that all retailers and/or Microsoft were offering the free Win7 upgrades to anyone who purchased a new computer in those time frames ?

who is the manufacturer of your laptop? You just need to go to their website and register your model.
