I don't think this works if you currently have Verizon DSL. My 1yr contract expired 2 months ago and I'm currently on month-to-month plan and called to get the 6 months free and they said I'm NOT a new customer.

then threaten to cancel, ask for cancellations and you'll see how they change their tune. MAKE SURE YOU OFFER TO GO ON CONTRACT AGAIN for one year as well. that is a requirement.
Verizon is known for billing issues. Make sure you check your bill. Myself and several people I know had problems. My best friend is a Verizon Fios installer and he gets jumped several times a day from people upset with verizon when he goes to make repairs.
On a side note I put in my phone number and it says Verizon fios is not available in my area. Funny I have been on Fios atleast 2 years now.

Nope, that what I said. Told them I'm on a month-to-month and I want to sign a new contract and get 6 months free. They said no, so I said that I would want to cancel my month-to-month and then sign a new 1 yr contract and was told that I would still not be considered a "new" customer.

I am also on a month-to-month. I told the rep that I am considering to move to a cable promotion that offers Phone/TV/Internet for $99 without a contract. I asked her nicely that if she could let me talk to a manager. She transfered me to another lady who gave me the 6-month free promotion. I guess it depends on who you are talking to. Will see how it goes and how messy they may do to my DSL bill as some people have gone through.
Doesnt seem to work for existing customers. I am on month to month and the choice disappears when you want to add the service. I am not complaining though, I pay $15/month for the same service and I am happy with it.

Why I only see FIOS and don't have choice for DSL? Any one know how to get DSL instead of FIOS.

if you're in a FIOS installed area, it will show FIOS.

has DSL gotten better over the years? I had DSL about 5 years ago and it was horrible, had trouble connecting consistently, connection speeds were erratic...had to ride out the contract for a year before i was able to switch back to cable...but for 15/month with 6 months free would save me a ton...

IMO yes, they upped the speeds on base DSL from 768K to 1MB about a year ago and that has helped a good deal.
How can anyone exist on DSL any longer? I assume the older generation still won't mind it since they don't do much but check e-mail/browse simple websites. But for things like Wireless, onling gaming, video streaming etc.. DSL is a dead technology.

You're quite wrong. DSL is fine for online gaming. Online gaming doesn't take big bandwidth, it depends more on latency, and DSL is generally fairly low latency. (Lower if you're on "fast path", rather than "interleaved") Video streaming is fine too, if you have 3Mbit or faster.
DSL is better than cable too, in many ways. At least in terms of Verizon versus Comcast. Comcast throttles you if you max out your connection, and caps you at 250GB/month for downloads. DSL does neither. Remember the adage about slow and steady wins the race?

Granted, but still a big leap from dial-up. Plus an affordable alternative to have some kind of internet access if you can't afford $40 a month for true high speeds.
The key to getting this deal for current customers is to imply, with some detail, that you plan to switch to the cable provider in your area. You may also have to ask for the retentions department. I've been successful renegotiating with Verizon 3x in the last two years. There is another thread, probably in expired deals, discussing a similar promotion Verizon ran for DSL and how many existing customers were able to take advantage of it. Good luck.

"dry loop" is available in some areas but it does cost more. this special does assume you have verizon phone service I believe

thanks for the additional info, i get the fios page too when i enter my number, so now i have to figure out how to get on this deal
I tried to order new Verizon DSL service but it did not give me 6 months free without subscribing the phone service, which costs $50 per month. Does anyone have the same problem?

this deal assumes you have verizon phone service. I think you mean Verizon assumes you have $50 per month phone service, not basic phone service.

no not at all. you can have basic phone service, make sure you are clicking the right choices. you don't have to take the freedom essentials bundle to get this deal.
I am getting ready to close/move-into my new house and i check on the availability of verizon DSL at the address a few weeks ago. I could have sworn there was 3Mbit/768Kbit available and maybe there was even a 7Mbit option. But the point is, i checked and it said these faster options were available. But now, when i check the address, it says that the fastest available DSL at the house is 1.5Mbit/384Kbit. How can they change the available speeds? Did the house suddenly get farther away from the CO? (sarcasm) Do they just not want to give me the speeds to play games with the prices. I don't get it. Anybody else have any insight on this issue?

Check your assumptions.
We have 768K DSL and 768K cable modem service. Both links work fine for "Wireless", online gaming, and video streaming (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube). We don't use our internet for telephony, but have tested them with Skype (audio) and they work fine.
Obviously, there are some applications (Telepresence, 1080P-ish Streaming) which would need more than 768K, but they aren't necessary to "exist", regardless of what generation you belong to.
Copper is not dead. For many, it is all they will ever have.
I have dsl wireless. I like it far better than charter. Verizon changed it's central page, if you have problems getting on, just turn the modem on and off once. I used the tech help when I changed computers, they are great. Yes, I am the older generation, on social. I play on line games and watch videos. I am not dead yet.
I had DSL dry loop for many months - on an internet-only home, i.e. phone/TV on internet as well. Worked slower than I'd like - specially when streaming TV or uploading anything. Switched to Cable - my upload speed is now a few multiples of DSL's download speed.
That said, for the casual user, I don't see anything wrong with DSL's speed. Its steady, reliable, never had to call maintenance, and the free wireless router from Verizon meant one less thing to maintain.
^^^ It would be helpful if you specified what speed DSL you had. My experience and setup mirrors yours at 768K. When I upgraded to 3.0M, I found DSL to be as good as Comcast Internet and far more reliable. [ETA] I am in Northern Virginia and about 13,000 feet from the CO if memory serves me correctly.
