Looks like Fry's has started advertising halfway decent value combos again lately. Now if they will only stock more than a token amount of them: CALL AHEAD before driving down.
Bay Area Fry's (and probably others) Friday ad advertises the following combos, price good through November 3rd:
1. AMD Athlon II X2 245 & BioStar MCP6P M2+ motherboard for $69.99 after a $10 MIR. The processor is pretty fast, about the same as an AMD Phenom II X2 545 or an Intel Core2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5GHz. The board is basic, but comes with onboard Nvidia 6150 and DDR2 support. Newegg hawks it for about $50, 4 SATA ports, 2 RAM slots, etc. The RETAIL processor runs $66 at the 'Egg. I suspect Fry's offers an OEM CPU.
2. AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU and Asus M3N78-VM for $130. The four core processor is quite fast, up there with the well-regarded Intel Core2 Quad Q6600, and normally sells for $100. Newegg sells the motherboard for $75.. It has onboard GeForce 8200 graphics, 4 RAM DDR2 slots, 5 SATA ports, 10/100/1000 ethernet, 8 channel sound, VGA, DVI & HDMI, as well as eSATA, S/PDIF, 6 port audio & 6 USB connectors on the rear panel. It does not have a PS/2 mouse port, if that matters to you (would make it hard to put in my KVM setup). According to http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ this combo is available at all Fry's locations.
Both of these are mATX boards and would work well in a HDTV, though the onboard video on the cheaper combo might have some difficulty with 1080 video.
Other stuff that might be of interest for a build: Antec Two Hundred Gamer Case, $40 XA Gaming Case, 380 watt PS, keyboard and mouse (all poor quality), $30 after $20 MIR 1 TB SATA hard drive, $60 Logitech LX6 rodent, $10 after $5 MIR $10 Pixxo USB web cam Creative Inspire A200 3 piece speaker system $20
More fun than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
