I got one of these last week. My only complaint so far is that the starter ink cartridges appear to be about 1/4 full - according to the printer lcd readout. I just purchased 6 ink cartridges on eBay for $11 shipped (3 black and 3 color).

I did not have that problem as I have the same printer. Be sure to gently shake the cartridges prior to install.
even if your situation is valid, these printers are not ink guzzlers AND the replacement ink is so affordable, you'll thank yourself many times over for getting this. An excellent printer/w great features for the money.

10 Cartridges for $18 shipped at ABC Ink / Meritline. There is usually a 5% - 15% off coupon on top of that. Seen them as cheap as $1.40/each.
These brother refurb printers at Staples are great. You could recycle the compatible cartridges at Staples and get $3 each. So, in effect, you get paid to use the printer

Since I already installed the ink cartridges I cannot shake them, but when before I install a new one I will try to remember to do this. I was not complaining about the printer as it is a great deal, and I think it was from your prior post that I found out about it.

oh, didn't mean to imply you were complaining. My point was, even if you did get cheated out of some ink in your "starter" carts, you'll still come out way ahead in the long run.
Was sorely tempted to get one for myself, just due to the cheap ink, but with 2 printers stacked up here, still in the box, from previous deals, decided I better let this one go for me...
FWIW, the junkie site came through fine with the $25 off $75 for $1.48.
BargainsJunkie thanks for the link to cheap refills. $17 shipped for 4 black and 2 of each color cartridges - can't beat that. It used to cost twice as much for one HP refill.

They never say how much there is on the cart. But they should.

Brother printers are the best, if you are looking for cheap 3rd-party ink. Meritline.com carries a lot of them. I have the MFC-420CN, and it's decent, although with the default bi-directional printing enabled, I get blurry black text. I think that the nozzle is loose, so each time it goes over the paper, in different directions, the nozzle drifts. I don't have that problem with the color ink.
So just recently I figured out a workaround. Disable bi-dir printing, and now my black text is sharp again.
Thanks OP - Got it yesterday, installed over network last night - Printing and scanning works like a charm with Vista and Windows 7 64 bit!! I got tired of the $30 a month ink habit my Canon printer developed Ordered ink from Meritline as well.

Ever notice there are lots of refurbished Brother printers available? It is because Brother makes very unreliable printers which don't last very long. If you want a printer which will last more than a couple of months look elsewhere.

I've been happily using my Brother DCP-110c since Jan of 2006 (paid around $26 and recieved a $40 rebate!) I just wish that it had FAX.
A great site to take care of some some of the little problems that come up is www.fixyourownprinter.com.
In for one as well...upgrading my MFC-210C, which has served me well and still in good condition.

My old cannon multipass-mp390 Flatbed inkjet All-in-One died over the weekend, so I have to buy a new one. I only used my cannon printer occasionally, but it's now completely useless after about 5 yrs. I don't know what's the average "life expectancy" of this type of printer. How long do I expect the brother EMFC-5860CN last?
Based on my experience of using the inkjet printer, I am tempting to buy a laser printer.
The Brother warranty seems to be pretty good. My purchased refurbed printer was having print alignment issues and color shadowing in certain areas...called Brother and they are sending a new (non refurbished) replacement. I thought about sending/exchanging back with Staples as I thought Brother was going to have me service it where I'd be without a printer for a while. I'm quite happy with the replacement..another set of ink cartridges should be included as well.

Thank you. Just received the printer yesterday and ordered some extra ink. There's a 10% off coupon on ABC inks homepage (thanks BargainsJunkie) good till Monday.
