isn't the blueray writer kind of pointless?

If you can burn/read over the network, and you've got the bandwidth (gigabit ethernet) to do so, I'd say it'd be worth it. You could (probably) watch Blu-Ray movies on your computer, should you want to.

Could worth it for a media server for a HTPC, too.

When you author HD movies for clients that want to watch their gloriful vacation video on their home system. I dunno what else you would write to.

No, I don't think the blue ray burner is pointless. You can burn disks and store them off site and/or secure location.

The key to this thing is the esata. I can see if you have a multicore 17" laptop with esata, this would be a good complement for video production.

Except the esata is to connect an external drive to this box, not to connect this box to a computer, as per a review at Newegg.

does this even support a 2tb drive? all the documentation i've seen says it supports up to 4gb, which means only 1tb per drive

I'm pretty sure the 4tb limit refers to individual bays, so the theoretical total storage this could support would be 16tb (4x4tb).

And for what it's worth, Newegg is selling this unit for $299.99 with free shipping right now.
