I see a $200 discount on the combo starting Nov. 1st at Costco. For reference it is $999 - $200 = $799. So this is $150 cheaper and a heck of a deal. Thanks OP.

Add the Tiffen 58mm UV Protection Filter to sweeten the deal. Promotion discount of $7.50 applied at checkout. Total for me is 643.71

There is also a $50 Canon Loyalty MIR for the XSi for people who already own Canon Powershot or EOS cameras.
Also, I think I saw a 50mm f/1.8 lens deal floating around -- add that to this kit, and you pretty much have a perfect all-purpose starter kit for under $640.
This also works for the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with the same lens. $200 off plus the $50 Rebate if you have one of the models mentioned on the form.

Paid $750 for that exact combo last Christmas -- great deal.
Yes, the Rebel T1i deal posted and this one are the same deal for two great Canon cameras. Not sure which is the better deal, but both work to get the $200 discount. The T1i is about $150 more though.

I did it no problem, just make sure you select Amazon as the supplier. Click on the "16 New" option and select Amazon as the distributor for both the lens and the camera. You can get it as iceplusplus mentioned for 643 (For some reason I get 643.71)

Yep, this is working, it's $643.71 for me as well now
If anyone wants this combo for $650 in the LA area, send me a message. I ordered it earlier this week but decided to go with the T1i instead. Lens should arrive tomorrow and camera the day after, let me know if you'd like it by tomorrow so I can decide whether or not to refuse the shipment tomorrow.

update: got the camera today, anyone interested? otherwise its going back to Amazon.
Yes. The deal is for the camera and lens sold directly through Amazon. You guys were too slow and Amazon sold out of the lens. The deal expires 11/21 so there's a good chance Amazon gets the lens back in stock.
I tried placing the items in the cart and it still works. The lens is not in stock at Amazon but they allow you to go to the end of the checkout process and the $200 discount applies.

If you return the camera, would you actually get $599 back or would they give you some sort of reduced amount?
