I rented a disc of the original series on Netflix and was only able to watch 1 episode. It was so cheesy that I felt stupid watching it.
Edit: I should say that this was my favorite show as a child, aside from Battlestar Galactica. Watching it again recently has ruined my memories. I won't dare rent an old DVD of Battlestar Galactica thinking it will result in the same.
ScFi channel ran this in a marathon a couple days ago. I tried watching it a bit but it was really bad, worse than watching old reruns of Battlestar Galactica...
The original V consisted of two multi-part miniseries. V, and "V the final conflict". For all intents of purposes, together they form "the miniseries". It's dated, but still pretty good. About 5 years afterwards, ABC tried to do a full TV series (24 episodes) that takes place about 10 years after the original series. And it is horrible (IMHO). I watched a couple episodes and couldn't watch the rest.
Now ABC is taking the whole franchise and trying to reconstruct the success of the Battlestar Galactica remake. However, they also intend to make it "post 9/11" so it's not clear who the enemy really is, etc. (as far as I read in interviews about this).

Oh noes! Osama bin V! Al Qaeda in Space! (Do I sense a muppet-show skit?)

For space ship SciFi, computer special effects look cartoonish, while the models used in the original BATTLESTAR, and in STAR WARS and ST:TMP were much more impressive.
Also, the heroes of yesterday's science fiction were much more charming and well, heroic and likable. Todays modern leading heroes are overly neurotic and depressing.
