I own one of these... I bought it from frys for $20. It doesn't work to well with the iphone, I suspect interference is the issue. I haven't tried it with airplane mode on, because it is a phone. The weight of the phone also seems to be an issue...
It comes with a aux cable that you can plug into the bottom of the dock, so you can use any mp3 player. I found that it works better with my iphone with that aux cable than it does in the charging cable.
I have this same mount and I love it. I was surprised how well it works. The only drawback is the arms don’t grip very well. I have to tilt the phone back so it doesn't slide out.

Mine works great with my Iphone 3g
I must have got a defect then. Mine will work fine for a while (~30 seconds) and then start humming until I wiggle the dock, then it will work again for 30 seconds. Rinse and repeat.
It doesn't do the humming as much if I use the aux over the ipod cable, but it still happens every now and then.

I have the same problem, it hums with my 3g and doesn't grip well.
