Nubbygunz, please change your title to "42 in. Panasonic Plasma HDTV $498 @ Best Buy - better than WalMart". Anyone doing a search for a panasonic, an HDTV or a plasma will not be able to pull up your thread.
NOTE: I'm assuming this is a plasma - Panasonic only makes one 42" LCD.
As for the self-proclaimed A/V experts complaining about the 720p resolution (which is what I presume this Panasonic will be), please see the link above for the 720p vs. 1080p comparison chart. At normal viewing distances you cannot tell a 720p display apart from a 1080p display. I've viewed a Blu-Ray playing on two Sharp 46" LCD HDTV's mounted one over the other on the same wall, one a 720p, the other a 1080p. Standing five feet away, you can tell the difference. From ten feet away (about the typical viewing distance between a couch and a TV), you could not tell the difference between the two TV's. If you plan on using the TV at closer viewing distances or plan on using it with a computer, then the higher resolution of a 1080p display makes sense because you'll actually be able to notice a difference, but otherwise, a 720p display will be just fine.
Personally, I'd rather have a basic-level Panasonic plasma than any lower-to-mid level LCD. The contrasts and colors will be a bit better on the plasma and unlike some of the lower-level LCD's, you will have smooth motion video, which is important for watching sports.

Take your most expensive LCD HDTV, with the best features possible. And for $1,000 less in costs you can Upgrade, to a better quality and picture quality with a Plasma, thats why I won't purchase LCD.
Its like I offer you a $2,000 Porche, but for only $1,000 you can have a 2010 Ferrari. Both are good but one is better and for less money so you get a better picture an d keep money in the bank.
Keep and eye out on 1080p Plasma 600hz HDTV's the will fly 42" 46" and 50"
Sharp LCD @ 60 hz or Panasonic @ 600 Hz. You have to be on top of the set to make the 1080p vs 720 p argument with a 42 incher. Panasonic all the way on this one. I suppose the $30/yr electical cost vs $52 is an advantage (consumer reports testing). However, visually... Panasonic.

Not in my book. The sharp is very nice entry level LCD but you have one of the winners of the plasma death march at the same price. The Plasma is better.
