Important quest:

Can the printer handle multiple paper sizes automatically?

For instance, if letter is loaded in the regular tray, & legal in the MP tray, and I send a pdf with both letter and legal inter-mixed, can the printer choose the correct paper from the correct source automatically?

(did anyone follow that?)

I followed that. I do this kind of stuff for a living, and I have an MF6530 at home. The answer is yes. You can associate letter size paper with cassette 1, legal size paper with cassette 2, in Printer Properties. Then, when you print a document that has both letter and legal size pages, set your tray selection to "Auto" in the print driver and you should be good to go.

dead for online orders as of all day Sunday unfortunately. Would've been perfect for my purposes

lucky if you live near a fry's to pick one up.

Wow. The csr's at frys.com are quite unreliable with the info they disseminate.

Despite being told on Sun that the frys.com warehouse was sold out and they wouldn't be getting any more due to the item being discontinued, AND since the web portal didn't specifically show "sold out", I kept trying to order every now and then- just in case someone cancelled or another one "trickled" into stock somehow.

Well, the web site kept "bombing" out when I would try to checkout so on Mon I decided to call a rep and try that route. I was told that it was sold out but 25 more were expected on the 11th so I asked if I could put an order in for backorder. That was done, but a couple hrs later I got the cancel email. That wasn't too much of a surprise.

When I called back that evening, the rep said there were no more, and he insisted they would NOT get any more at all, nor would he place a "backorder" for me like the rep did earalier. Regardless, I decided to try again on the web portal Tues night, just in case what I was previously told about the 11th was true.

I was able to put in an order last night, and today, it shipped.

Crazy. When all the other rep's I'd spoken to thru the course of the last several days said no way no how were they getting anymore, that one lone rep turned out to be giving the correct info. I guess the rep who said they were getting more on the 11th wasn't supposed to tell customers that info? I dunno.

In any event, I couldn't be happier. I already have a Canon MF4370dn which is a great printer, but missing one feature which I've found I sorely needed: the ability of the printer to automatically "use" the correct size paper from the "correct" tray (as I asked about in my earlier post above).

This is an excellent deal for a printer that completely meets all my required features:

  • Networked
  • 2 trays which can be set to diff. size papers
  • Drum built-in to toner carts
  • Decent speed (i.e., better than 20 ppm)
  • Toner (aftermaket) less than 1¢ per page (for this model it's about 0.5¢ per page)
  • Price point of less than $200

The only way I've found to meet those requirements was to go much "higher" end and get a HP LJ 4200-4350.. And even as a refurb, you'll pay at least $400, but of course you'll get twice the print speed and toner of about 0.3¢ per page, BUT, no scanning/copying at all on the HP.

The duplex printing AND duplex scanning with ADF on this model are major bonuses to me. My current 4370dn's ADF doesn't do duplex scanning via its' ADF and I paid substantially more for it than for this.

So, thanks again OP! I don't know where I would've been able to find a printer that meets my requirements at this price point otherwise..

I doubt I would've been able to anytime soon anyway.

Update

Got the printer.

As a printer it's excellent and a major upgrade for me.

Compared with my Canon mf4370dn, using a printer with the ability to select the correct paper size from the correct tray automatically, for printing dox with mixed paper sizes, is a major upgrade for me, saving lots of time and work that I would spend manually "sorting" blank paper sizes before loading into a single tray. Also the tray capacitites are much more substantial.

The scanner is an upgrade as well being able to scan double sides, and accomodate larger capacity packages as well.

The only caveat is w.r.t. scanning: There is NO scanning over ethernet, only USB. A little dissappointing, and as a result I will probably hold on to the 4370 since it can do network scanning.

That said, I mainly needed this for the print abilities, which are superior to what I had, plus I will save $$ on toner as it's ~70% cheaper than my mf4370dn.

Overall, very happy with the purchase, especially at a final price of $186 (incl. shipping).

P.S. 2 things.

The printer is significantly larger than I anticipated. It's about 50% larger and heavier than the 4370 I have.

One reviewer listed a negative point being that the LCD is NOT backlit. It is indeed, backlit.

can this scan to usb without the need to turn on the pc ?

TheBoy said:can this scan to usb without the need to turn on the pc ?NO, as there are no USB slots on it.

With respect to scanning, I also discovered that the either the driver or the software is not as "good" as on my "lesser" MF4370dn, as when I scan mixed (legal & letter) pages via the ADF to any application (I've typically been using "MS Office Document Imaging"), the results I get are ALL legal sized scans.

When I do that with the 4370 (& over ethernet to boot), the results are both legal && letter sized scans. That's "neater" or more "profesional" IMHO. It uses a program called "Color Network Scangear", which is different from "ScanGear MF" that the 6540 uses, AND "Color Network Scangear" ONLY works over ethernet so it can't be cfg'd to work with the 6540.

Maybe it's the driver and not the software, I don't know, but there aren't any updates for the driver on the 6540 newer than 2.0 which came with the printer. (nor are there any updates for the "old" "Scangear MF" vers 11.3 that came with the 6540. kinda sucky. There are still updates being released for "Color Network Scangear")

I haven't ever tried the 4370 over USB. I should to see if it would use the same "old" "Scangear MF" rather than "Color Network Scangear", and determine if it's the driver or the software making the difference.

Either way, it's not a show-stopper, just a bit surprising. Maybe I can find a canon forum and ask for suggestions there.
