i saw this deal this morning. i very much need a new big @ss hard drive....but the reviews on this are just terrible. looks like the RMA rate on this particular model is pretty high. guessing the egg is trying to dump their remaining stock.
I have 3 of the "terrible" st31500341as drives and they all function properly after the fixed firmware (this isn't even that drive). Ignore the schmuck up there.
Yep, it was the early models that had a ton of problems. I have been running one of these drives for over a year now and no problems. I'm running 1.0 TB and 1.5 TB Seagate drives in my current PC; the 1.0 TB drive actually runs hotter than the 1.5 TB drive -- if that makes any sense at all!

I've been running one since earlier this year (w/SD1B firmware which I had to upgrade to) and by all outward experience it seems to be fine. Running a SMART test reveals some out of tolerance issues but it is still rated as "OK".
For my RAID-5 NAS I went with four retail boxed 1TB 7200.12 (5 year warranty) from Frys for $89.99 otherwise I'd be giving this some consideration. I don't totally trust these drives (7200.11 1.5TB) long-term though. Use RAID or backup.

Are you saying this just based on the Newegg reviews or do you have some other source? I usually don't put a lot of weight on Newegg reviews but in this case I have to admit there seems to be an unusual amount of reports of failed drives. I usually buy WD Greens for storage but this one was reviewed better so I was gonna try it. Now I'm hesitant though.

Now I'm hesitant though.i've read the same negative reviews on a few different storage sites. the Newegg reviews were just the icing on the cake for me. I'm looking to buy a new hard drive, so believe me, i'd jump on this if i had any doubt of the problems. and I have a college buddy that works for Seagate, so I tend to favor them on that too, but not to the point of risking data. my next drive will replace my parity drive on an unRaid box, so reliability is key.

I will wait until smoke clears on clicking problems with these drives. It is interesting how HD companies cannot maintain leadership position for long. I used to buy mostly Fujitsu drives, switched to IBM/Hitachi, to Seagate and most lately to WD.
How much stock can you put in Newegg reviews with one like this out there. This guy didn't even buy the drive, just rated it poorly based on other reviews. What a numb-skull.
"Cons: It's too bad Seagate is not paying more attention to sites such as these. I am not purchasing this device based on the reviews. Why would I?"
