I have the original WD HD media player and love it. I was thinking of buying this and then reselling my original, but I don't know how much that will net me. The only reason I'd pick up this new one is the network port. I know I can hack one to the one I have, but I'd still have to pay for a usb network adapter... wondering if buying this new one and reselling my old one will be the same offset in price...
I just don't like that this is GREY and not BLACK. I love the black finish of mine.
Since store pickup is not available where I live (bay area, CA), with S&H + tax it costs about the same from Amazon. In addition, it is now back ordered. Not that hot of deal.
With all of these 'TV' appliances, I always wonder, why not just connect a DVI cable from your computer to an external monitor, or a TV w/built-in DVI, and voila. Much cheaper alternative.

Actually I have been doing this for years. The only problem for me now is that I have 2 22" monitors hooked up to my computer now leaving no output for my TV. So this would be a decent deal for me. Thanks OP!

New one has more RAM, network port, DTS decoding (BIG deal for people without a receiver)

Is it cheaper? It's cheaper if you already have a computer in the same room as your TV that is strong enough to decode high bitrate HD. My computers are in a separate room from my HDTV. My older computer (P4 3.0 GHz) does 720p alright, but 1080p will stutter and runs on much more power than my WD Media Player (I think under 10watts). And sitting my butt on the couch with a remote in my hand is easier then a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (if you already have it)
When you talk about DTS decoding, are you refering to the regular DTS or the most up to date high definition DTS? My receiver is kind of old, which is unable to decode the HD DTS, if I use this WD machine and play the bluray files with HD DTS audio, can WD live decode it and send decoded DTS signal to my receiver? This is the only concern I have to pull the triger. Thanks!

From what I've read, it will work in your situation. It downmixes the DTS-HD to the DTS 5.1 or 2ch Stereo (depending the the audio setting). I read this on AVS and WDTVforum. I don't think it even supports full DTS-HD, it will always downmix to one of the other two settings.

How is this compare to the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD Media Player? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate+-+FreeAgent+Theater%2B+HD+Media+Player/9539494.p?PID=404255&id=1218121172541&ref=39&productCategoryId=pcmcat186100050005&loc=01&URL=http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9539494&productCategoryId=pcmcat186100050005&type=product&id=1218121172541&AID=10597222&skuId=9539494

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking at, but this is a stand alone player. It doesnt REQUIRE any computer/OS. I think what you may be looking at is using a pc as a media server. There are basicly 3 ways to play content on this thing......1) off an external hard drive plugged into the unit via usb.....2)network share via ethernet.....and 3) streaming from a media server. I think the Vista requirement is geared toward the media server aspect as it is the first version of windows that has that function with no additional updates. XP will do it as well with newer windows media player, as will several 3rd party DLNA media servers such as playon, tveristy, etc, which are actually better as they will stream internet content such as hulu, various podcasts, etc instead of just local content which you could access with any computer/os via regular network file shares.
Anyhow, great little unit. I've had one since they came out. Totally replaces an HTPC and the like in a very small, power efficient, well working little unit. Also, due to the size and ability to play about anything, it's great for travelling if you spend a lot of time overseas such as I do. No longer am I limited to foreign tv or else only watching regular stuff on the laptop. Can hook this thing up to the hotel room tv and watch normal stuff. Yes, you can hook up an appropriately equipped laptop directly to the tv, but it is often a headache tweaking drivers and such for the output to be correct where as this little thing you can just hook it up and go every time all the time.

I dont remember exactly what came in the box anymore although I do still have the box and unused contents somewhere. I dont remember there being a book in it though. Maybe just a quickstart insert if anything. That's pretty typical these days though. Guide is usually on the disk when there is one and no paper guide in the box.
