however, it is a really good deal... it's $100 less than last week's two $200 coupons (this time they don't stack--if they did this would be smoking hot)

This is a great deal for a laptop with such configuration. At least that's how I thought when I ordered it. I'm using it now and I have to say I'm disappointed.
Good: - big bright screen - remote control, great for watching movies - stylish finish Bad: -Network Card: wireless internet is very unstable, drops every 5-10 minutes even though my router is next to it. My previous Dell laptop never had this issue. -Blue-Ray Player: the movie stops after 1 hour playing. I have to shut down the laptop and let it cool down for 15 minutes before I can continue the movie. - The speakers are overrated, it's slightly better than average, but not as good as they advertise - Up/Down/Left/Right keyboard buttons are VERY VERY small -Shipping time: took 21 days after order to receive it.
Use BING for this purchase, I got 3% discount but not before I contacted Microsoft several times.

What about performance? I'm planning to do some development (Visual Studio.NET, ASP.NET, SQL2008) and design (Photoshop) on it. Is it adequate?

Is it noisy? Heating much?
TIA
This laptop is very quiet, actually. However, if you play blue-ray, it will get hot rather quickly. I heard several complaints from previous HP users about this overheating issue. Seems like HP has not paid attention to this problem. I haven't had a chance to do really heavy work on this laptop yet. I did a 10-minute movie clip today using Windows Movie Maker, and the computer seemed to get the job done well.
Another CON: this laptop does not have backlit keyboard.
this is a desktop-replacement. It is pretty heavy and bulky. Don't expect to carry it around with you. You'll either break your wrist or drop the laptop sooner or later. You'll also have a hard time finding a backpack or case that actually fits this laptop.
Currently, there are very few 18" models in the market. Until other manufacturers release better 18" laptops, I think this is the best big-screen laptops you can get now.
Overheats kills the deal plus I have an HP laptop at work that I do not like.
How important is the backlit keyboard?

Does anyone know if HP fixed the screen? The predecessor HDX 18t had a "no bezel" screen (ie. no protruding frame) which rubbed against the keyboard and got all scratched up.
I don't understand this fascination with weight. If it were, say, 50 pounds, that would be a problem. But I can carry 10 pounds just as easily as I can carry 5.
