i sometimes forget but having att as a internet provider allows connection to wifi that at&t does at airports too (just used it at Reagan Airport in Virginia (washington DC)

I have ATT/SBC and wifi is not free at most airports.

No need to thank them. They wouldn't be providing it if they knew they wouldn't get a return on their investment. Google makes money when more people use the internet. They probably have calculated that those airports would generate the most positive cash flow.

I guess I don't follow that logic. I thank people every day that have a vested interest in my usage of their "product"...waitresses, co-workers, the clerk at Target, etc. If someone does something nice for me, I thank them.
As for Google getting a return on their investment, I'm OK with that--I give them a little information, they give me free Internet at airports, a free search engine, free e-mail, free voicemail, etc.
I heard the DJs talking about this on the radio this morning. The participating airports in this promo will be asking for donations (for charity). I guess it makes sense that some airports that regularly have free wifi would want to tap into people's giving spirit

That's not true. You pay your flight ticket, part of which include "airport construction" etc.

Just returned from a trip to Asia. Airports in both Taiwan and China provide free internet, free meals even on flights as short as 2 hours, and free movies and alcohol. Airport was clean, modern, and attendants were friendly. Free internet is the LEAST they can do here in the States.

yeah HKG's airport has free wifi as well, from the HK Gov.
