Apple iPhone 3GS - 16 GB (Refurb) $150 from ATT, $50 less than the new one. $30 data plan is required. Both color are available. Family plan is possible too.
This is similar to the 3G 8GB refurb ($50), while new 3G 8GB is $100.
*Requires purchase of a $30/mo data service. 2 year contract & new activation required. Limit 2 iPhone devices per household when ordering online. iPhone does not qualify for the Bing CashBack program.

is it possible to buy one at 150$ and then cancel immediately thereafter and just pay a 175$ early termination fee?
aka iphone for ~325$? (or the 50$ + 175$ 8gb one...)

$150 + $36 one time activation + $30 data plan + $39 voice + $175 early termination = $430 & taxes
If you plan on terminating, you must wait for and pay for at least 1 month of service. Terminating before 1 month and ATT will require you to return the phone as you will be within your "trial" period.

I'll probably get one unlocked as Xmas gift to myself.

FAN account.... I worked for the government and got a discount from ATT by providing proof (ID card etc.). Although I no longer work there, they don't make you show proof any time after you first set it up so you get the discount for as long as you're with them. I'm not sure if it works for other non-government employers though. As far as the free activation goes, just call around and ask different Direct ATT stores in your neighborhood and say you want it waived. Any location can do this; it's just whether or not that particular store manager will approve it. I got three iPhone 3GS's during two separate trips by calling around like this. Bytheway, you don't automatically get your activation fee waived - at least in the Bay Area - just because you have a FAN account. You still have to call around, but it's still good for the 15% discount.
You will save more than $50 based on your tax rate.
For example here is a sample in California:
New 3gs $199 + around $52 tax (they calculate tax on pre-discounted price in CA, which is $499-$599 I guess) = $252 Refurbished 3gs $149 + $14 tax (tax on original value, which is $149) = $163
so its around $90 saving in California.
I bought a Refurbished 3G (not gs) for $50 + $4 tax...so I bought a 3G for the Tax amount that we need pay for a 3gs

hmm...seems like a good deal; especially with only around $14 tax....(almost $100 less than the $199 version)
