I will only say that you get what you pay for. Tiffen filters are not known for excellence. (Before anyone suggests that I am threadcrapping, I have four Tiffen filters used on several different lenses and have compared them side by side with higher quality filters).

I totally agree. Look for ones that are multi-coated. A good quality filter goes for around $30.
Just want to add to the chorus. I also started out using Tiffen filters and would recommend something else. Hoya filters are a great choice IMO and you don't have to break the bank to get a good filter from them.
Tiffen and Hoya sell filters at at different price/quality levels. Cheap Hoya filters are not much better than cheap Tiffen filters. If you want a good filter, you need to look at their higher quality levels, such as Hoya HMC.
However, I question the need for UV filters. The white balance feature in all modern digital cameras should correct for any UV color shift. Unless you are really clumsy, the value of a "protection" filter is very questionable (unless you're trying to photograph a sandstorm).

Don't have small children tryin to touch the fancy camera, do ya? It's waaaay easier to clean the filter surface than the lens itself...don't ask me how I know this... lol
