There have been a number of deals lately on the Shun Steel Series knives (both Alton's Angles and "normal" Steel Series), but deals on Shun Classic are rare. Here's one:

I'd found this on Amazon's site a couple of weeks back, it had a "usually ships in 5-7 weeks" notation, and no picture (still doesn't), so I didn't bite for a while. Finally ordered last week out of curiousity, and to my surprise got a "this item will ship sooner than expected" notice a few days ago. Received the knife yesterday, and it's this knife. Shun's fancy box says "DM-0756 Sheepsfoot 3.5" Paring Knife, Made in Japan".

These are the Shuns I like, with the nice heavy-ish Pakkawood handles. Hope this helps someone for the holidays.

Is Shun owned by Bose?

No, the knives aren't made of paper and sold at Best Buy.

Wow... Really?!?

This knife, DM0756, is 39.95 standard price. The blade might be the same but it doesn't have the steel end cap.

Ah, was unaware of this. Thanks for the info!

Fwiw, I collect the Shun "steel" series, buying a knife whenever the price hits rock bottom on Amazon.com and can tell you the equivalent 3.5" pairing goes as low as $32.

The steel series has silver handle, blade and handle all one piece. LOVE THEM!

The Steels are nice, too, I just prefer the balance and heft of the wood handle on the Classic series, and find them less slippery when wet. Like any great cutlery, it's a matter of personal preference and usability.

As far as overall value, there have been certainly a ton of great deals on the Steel series lately. I'm hoping there will be deals on at least a few of the Classics somewhere down the road.
