EDIT: This deal was supposed to run from the 13th to 17th. It is out of Stock at Bay Area Fry's by Saturday morning, fairly typical Fry's loss leader practice. I spent 15 minutes on the phone with 4-5 Frys this morning before I got some one to check the stock, just a hint, don't let the phone operator transfer you to the computer department, that gets you off their plate, but your chances of getting a live person in 'puters is low. There may be 1 combo left in Palo Alto. I'm going to stop posting Fry's combo deals, if they are decent deals they don't stock enough units so they run out almost immediately, it is generally bait n' switch. Fry's reposted the $50 Celeron e3200 combo this morning, maybe you'll have better luck, but I would call ahead: Fry's is hawking the AMD Athlon X2 II 550 CPU and a MSI 785GTM-E45 motherboard for $110 after a $10 MIR. The retail black edition of the processor is $102 at the 'Egg, though this is likely a OEM CPU without fan. The board runs $70 plus shipping there, as well. The CPU is a pretty fast dual core unit, towards the high side of dual core processors. The board has very decent onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphcis with HDMI, VGA & DVI ports. It is mATX, has 2 DDR2 slots, 6 SATA ports, 6 port 8 channel sound, 10/100/1000Mbps ethernet, 4 USB on the back panel and 2xPS/2 ports. The combo would make a nice HDTV. Some folks seem to have unlocked this combo, though of course YMMV. From the Egg reviews: Pros: Unlocked the 2 cores on Phenom II 550 to a x4 3.25 processor! That's why I bought it! 5 Eggs on that! The onboard graphics is highly overclockable. 500mhz is now set to 825! The onboard audio for HDMI works! Cons: Bad spot for audio jack. I have to feed a wire across the motherboard. "I have a see through case" and wire management is a must. Other Thoughts: My steps to unlock: A $109 processor that's now a $189 processor. Clocked at 3.25Mhz stable x4. Set CPU voltage to 1.4, turn ACC to auto and enable the theory option, set North Bridge to 1.2 volts. No need for BIOS update........Please note that HD3300 is at 700mhz and can overclock stable to 825 with a reported 900 stable. The HD4200 is set at ONLY 500mhz and can overclock to 825 stable and has been reported at 1000Ghz stable. HD4200 has Direct X 10 support unlike the HD3300. It is supposedly on sale from Friday the 13th until the following Monday, if you are not planning on visiting Fry's by noon on Friday I would call ahead to verify availability, Fry's has been playing bait & switch by only have a few advertised combos in stock recently. There is also a Antec VSK-2000 mid-tower case for $29. They are also advertising 1.5 TB drives for $100, an internal Seagate and external WD. There is also a dual core Celeron E3200 CPU and Intel chipset G31 motherboard on sale for $50 after a $10 MIR. The CPU is almost as fast as the AMD combo (1438 vs. 1821 on some benchmarks), but doesn't have hardware accelerated virtualization support or decent onboard graphics. Edited to reflect that the sale is at all Fry's |
