Okay, this may possibly rate as the hottest Barnes & Noble deal (that I have posted) ever. I'll add it to CANYDAVID's Official B&N Thread but right now I wanted to give everyone a heads up on just how good a deal you may be able to cut with B&Neven if you ordered online from them previously.
TWO Observe that B&N apparently has a new >>ACCOUNT DATABASE. Why does this matter? Because if it's been awhile since you ordered online from them — and you can use a different email address — you can register FREE for a NEW ACCOUNT . . . and be eligible for 20% OFF THE HIGHEST-PRICED ITEM IN YOUR CART. You do not have to purchase a membership to get this discount, just reregister a NEW ACCOUNT when, during the Checkout process, you are offered the option of CREATING A NEW ACCOUNT.
THREE If there are limited-edition books you've been waiting to add to your collection — private presses, such as Poisoned Pen and/or just plain Expensive As Hell hardcover titles that have never been offered at a discount anywhere (even on Amazon) — I can't urge you strongly enough to hunt down your titles on B&N where you may see, for the first time, SUBSTANTIVE DISCOUNTS ON RARER TITLES. Put a nice pricey one in your cart; complete the checkout process; create a NEW ACCOUNT when prompted; and the final step will be . . .
FOUR After NEW ACCOUNT has been created you're given one last opportunity to enter a discount code. Enter F4B9F7R; hold your breath; and if the Gods are with you you should see a nice meaty increase on your discount totals.
I found a $27 Poisoned Pen I've been waiting for . . . 21.56 I found a $24 Simon & Schuster that, again, never goes on sale . . . 20.52 I grabbed the $30 Criterion W.C. FIELDS, 6 SHORT FILMS . . . 14.95
• 57.63 SHIPPED w/CA Sales Tax • If the FAT CASH goes through, that will be an additional $4.22 • TOTAL $53.41 for $81.00 worth of merchandise
Extensive discussion of deal over at DVDTalk Bargains forum, also some at SD. The sale runs through November 24th.
If you have a B&N Membership ($25/year), you can improve the deal. First, the membership gets you an additional 10% off. Second, many people have been able to sweet-talk the person at the register into accepting multiples of the $5 off coupon found here, getting $5 off each disk---but YMMV on that. The coupon says $5 off a $20 DVD, and the "$20" refers to the PRE-discount price of the DVD. So it will work on any of the Criterions, the cheapest of which is $29.99 before the 50% off. I was also able to stack the $5 off $50 with the DVD coupon on one visit.
If you don't have a B&N membership, but do belong to AAA, you can go through AAA's weblink and get an addtional 10% off that way. Bing also gives 10% CashBack at B&N, but I doubt you can stack it with the AAA discount. Maybe, maybe not.
There are other discount codes floating around for instore and online, including a 25% off a single item code, and supposedly a 20% off anything code for new accounts online. Haven't used those but I assume they stack with the automatic 50% off discount on the Criterions.
There's also a gift card deal at B&N (both online and in-store) right now---buy $100 in GC's, get an (email) gift certificate for $10. However, you won't get the $10 until December 26th. Still, it's free money if you're going to buy a lot of DVDs, and they ship the gift cards fairly promptly. Order today and I think you will probably get them before the sale times out on 11/24. Plus you can get 8% off your gift card purchase if bought online via FatCash---it all adds up.
After you create a new account, I'm not seeing where you get the 20% off? Didn't get it automatically, which I thought I would. The last one works -- on the most expensive item only -- but not the new member discount.

The F4B9F7R code needs to be absolutely the last modification you make to the order before placing the order: You'll see the button to PLACE ORDER . . . then scroll down and you're given one last box to enter in a coupon. Be sure you don't drop it into the Member Number box!
Try flushing your cookies and all offline content, then start the ordering process all over again; try another browser; and if that still doesn't work airtech, the only other thing I can think of is that perhaps you last ordered from them after they moved to their new(er) database (?. It's been a couple of years since I last ordered from them, if that's any help.
TTY, Thanks --- I think I misunderstood your original message. The F4... works as the sole 20% new member discount. I thought, from your point (2), that an initial "hidden" 20% would be applied, then the F4B ... 20% , making it, in effect a cumulative 40%! That would have been ON FIRE.

Still, for us hardcover folk with expensive taste (use of word CRITERION in subject line not anecdotal more's the pity heh) . . . just to get even a couple of dollars off of titles that not only never see a discount, but are contenders for a possible future RARE BOOK/OOP market is a thrill. Here in CA the 10% sales tax would normally kill the discounts, but that 20% code snaps it right back (or did on my order). My God. A B&N order that is actually cheaper than Amazon. What is the world coming to lol.

Actually, the 50% off sale also applies to B&M. You're right: if you manage to get a "rare" or soon-to-be out of print Criterion, a great collectible it makes indeed. Admittedly, I tried my local BN to see if there were any older spine #'s that got lost in the shuffle, but no luck. (trying hard to track down Tokyo Olympiad from some place other than eBay). On the flip side, any of those box sets + additional 20% is a steal: Cassavetes, Bergman, et al.

jonesyjones said: I can only get 20% off with the code. This is with a new account. Has anyone got close to 50% off? I'm not following you jonesy. The coupon is for 20% off of the highest-priced item. CRITERION is on sale for 50% off.
Today Amazon put a small fistful of Criterions---including a few Blu-Ray versions---on sale for about 55% off, matching the B&N member+sale discount price: Link
