I like the BB BF deal to get this with an addl 55-200 lens for $599 with bag

still expensive to me.

Is this a big step up from the D40?

flipexxed said: Is this a big step up from the D40?If you already have a D40, the D3000 is not really an upgrade for you. If you are looking to upgrade, I'd move to the D5000 from a D40.

If this is your first DSLR, than it is a very good one, and I'd choose it over the D40. The D3000 has a 10MP sensor (vs. 6MP), 11-point 3D AF (vs. 3), Active D-Lighting (vs. non), and a 3" LCD (vs. 2.2"). As a matter of fact, I picked this up during the double Bing CashBack days and love it. Quick focusing, great exposure compensation and nice screen. With the money I saved over the D5000 I picked up a SB-600 Flash and the 18-200MM Zoom lens. Even if you stick with the kit lenses, this is a very good camera.

To someone's earlier point, wait for the BB BF deal. The 55-200 is a $250 MSRP lens and BB is throwing it and a case in for an additional $100. That's a great deal.

This is sold by 6Ave. However I see they sell it for $549 on their own site. Also on D5000 there is a difference in the price they sell through Amazon and on their site. Wondering why they would do it...any comments??

Cool... thanx guys. I just bought the d40 a month ago for $349.... though i jumped at the wrong deal. Looking at reviews on the D3000 it looks like I made the right choice. Other than the megapixel count (which is misleading) and the other minuscule improvements in the D3000; the d40 is still currently a best buy considering the current prices.

It is currently around $612 at Amazon with the additional lens (but no bag) and no tax to most states.
You have to add both items to cart and go through the last stage of payment to see the $100 discount.

Ken is the most entertaining personality in the DSLR world. His reviews are always a good counterpoint to the way-too-serious tone of other review sites.
