WRONG.
Lifetime membership stays with the unit and is fully transferrable.
For this offer, you have to buy your own service for the new unit. That's $300 for a new lifetime subscription. That makes the TiVo HD $448 or the HD XL $698.
Product Lifetime Service (PLS) was created at the request of our customers that want to pay once for the life of that DVR. We hope you continue to get great value from your current TiVo DVR with PLS. Your current PLS is not transferrable to your new TiVo DVR through this offer.
And, dreys, you're correct that lifetime membership stays with the unit. However, you are wrong that it is fully transferable. Your two statements are contradictory.

I think he means it doesn't transfer to the new unit that one would potentially buy from reading this thread.
Agreed. From TiVo's site: Product Lifetime Service (PLS) was created at the request of our customers that want to pay once for the life of that DVR. We hope you continue to get great value from your current TiVo DVR with PLS. Your current PLS is not transferrable to your new TiVo DVR through this offer, however you are eligible to receive $100 off a new PLS contract ($299.00 vice 399.00).
In other words, my Series2 TiVo's lifetime subscription does not carry to the HD TiVo (if I buy it).
misch said: Edit: I wonder if there is a way to combine this with the free wireless adapter listed in the FatCash section? I got it by calling them and whining. They wouldn't combine my $150 savings with a free adapter coupon, and only gave me half off, but hey! $30 opposed to $60 is still pretty good! Esp. considering you need that specific TiVo adapter (e.g. can't use Linksys anymore) in order to use network connection. I have no phone line, so this is my only option.
Very tempting!! Shows $149 for me. Have a S1 that has a grandfathered lifetime that I could transfer to this TiVo HD. But trying to watch less TV. Haha. Like a discounted buffet when you are trying to diet.

You would think they might cut me some slack....3 other TiVo HDs with PLS....and I beta test for them....weasels!
This is interesting. The only reason that I never have upgraded is that I have lifetime service from 10 years ago and could see a reason why I would have to pay again. When my Series 1 broke a few years ago I had to pay a replacement fee to get a new series 2, which was like $75 but still have the same lifetime service. I remember that they changed the lifetime stuff and didnt even have it for a while but I was grandfathered in to the old contract. Does anyone else have that? Have you had any experience trying to upgrade and not get new service?
For those of you that see $100 off, how old are your units? I'm only seeing $50 and mine is at least 3-4 years old. But I have only had it for about a year and a half.
EDIT: Nevermind, it says you get a bigger discount if you've been a customer for over 3 years. It's not based on the age of the TiVo itself.

Ahh, maybe I answered my own question. When I click that pop up it says the same thing with this added sentence: Your current PLS is not transferrable to your new TiVo DVR through this offer, however you are eligible to receive $100 off a new PLS contract.

What do you mean by grandfathered lifetime sub? I have a S1 with lifetime that's been sitting around doing nothing for a while. Would love to get a HD TiVo and transfer the lifetime if possible. So how do you know if you qualify?
My contract is over 1yr old and I have a Series 2. Maybe I'm not eligible. I got the same. And that's not really a deal, since I could always get the refurb for that price. Boo.
i believe the original lifetime subscription you could get 10 years ago was for your lifetime not the unit. you might just need to call up and ask what they can do for you. i have always just been too lazy to do it. my TiVo has been gathering dust for years because it looks so crappy on my HDTV and I havent wanted to spend the bucks for a new one and have to figure out if they will honor that old contract still...

If you purchased your Product Lifetime service before January 21, 2000, and have not previously transferred your service, then you are allowed a one-time transfer of your Product Lifetime from your current unit to any other model of standalone DVR. To effect this transfer, call customer support, 1-877-367-8486. If they have any difficulty in understanding, you can mention that the grandfather clause is documented in the internal support article with the rescode 09-07-04.

I also got an email about this offer and thought hell time to upgrade... Until you read and then reread the bs marketing wording which didn't say anything, until you click the faq link and then read down where it says you can't transfer your current PLS to the new unit. Make me really sick to think TiVo treats long time customers like this by using a bs wording on the upgrade information which might or maybe leads yo to the idea you can upgrade your unit with the PLS. I wrote feedback to TiVo saying fire the marketing scumby who wrote this and offer a really deal for your long time customers who use and love your products...

I have 2 TiVo-Series 2 w/ PLS more than 8 yrs. I will NOT get any new TiVo-HD, unless I can transfer my 2 PLS contracts.
TiVo's marketing strategy really SUCKS !!! They don't acknowledge to their customer's need...
TiVo lifetime is for a specific unit's ID number. It's a lifetime deal on THE UNIT regardless of who's roof it's under. The contract does need to be transferred to the other roof (new owner when the time comes) ahead of time so the company doesn't think it's a stolen unit with somebody getting scott free lifetime without paying. Obviously the previous owner tacks on the price of the contract to help recoup the big cost of it.
Since you still can't get on demand programming, I've been waiting for the next TiVo to come out (possibly named 'Series 4'). It was confirmed almost a year ago that it is in the works and a the release date was pushed back to 2010. It's supposed to have Tru2way which is what cable systems are supposed to be switching to.

PLS seems to have met your needs when you bought it for 2 different units 8 years ago. Only now when there is something newer and shinier are they suddenly scum for honoring the terms of the agreement you entered in to.
You got what you bought. Quit whining...

I think this might finally be the time to upgrade from my Series 2 -- I'm quite tired of not having a HD DVR. Gotta think, though, if I want to spring for a new PLS -- probably worth it since, even if I decide to go another direction after a year, a TiVo with PLS retains good value on eBay.
Lifetime members are always screwed by TiVo except on one occasion a few years ago when were allowed to upgrade to a Series 2 and transfer the membership.
The more successful they get the more they forget about the people who bought lifetime memberships when TiVo did not know whether they would be around 5 years.
mlhm5 said: Lifetime members are always screwed by TiVo except on one occasion a few years ago when were allowed to upgrade to a Series 2 and transfer the membership. It's the ones who pay monthly who are throwing their money away. Buying PLS is like prepaying for about 3 or 4 years. After that you start saving money. TiVos with PLS have more value and can be sold for a higher price than a TiVo without PLS. If a TiVo with PLS breaks they allow you to transfer your PLS to a new unit for a fraction of the cost of a new PLS purchase.
Unlike the old standard def Tivos, HD Tivos don't control a tuner box and record they output. They actually hook directly to the signal and record the feed digitally, keeping it in its originally compressed form.
They can do this for cable because the format of the digital feed is standardized on QAM with CableCards to handle any decryption (thanks FCC!). For satellite, the different providers each do their own thing and it's all proprietary.

Not to tell you your business, but you could probably make some money by selling that Lifetimed unit...the hardware isn't really worth anything, but that lifetime service might be.

Just to clarify, it's how long your TiVo box has been activated. So you need to have a series 2 active for 3 years to get the $100 discount.
