Add the Nikon 70-300mm VR for $515.12 - $200 IR = $315.12 Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR and here is the Price Tracking (The current price ($515.37) is the lowest we've ever seen.)
Here were my alerts when I checked my cart today . . . wow, big price drops. Don't think about it, just do it. Please note that the price of Nikon D300s 12MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) has decreased from $1,574.00 to $1,499.95 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages.
Please note that the price of Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras has decreased from $530.01 to $515.37 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages.
I had to pull the trigger on the combo. Want to play with the in camera HDR and video. Just need to wait for my pre-order for the new 70-200mm VRII to come in . . . could have used the extra DX reach for fall baseball season, but oh well.
Current Setup: Nikon D700, 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 50mm 1.4G 60mm D Micro, 28-200mm G (FX)
It was in my Goldbox "Quick Picks", but not the GoldBox for everyone. Alternative method is to Order from J&R with 5% CB and then call them to PM Amazon . . .
SSi said: $75 off is a big price drop for this camera? Actually it dropped $100 almost 2 weeks ago to $1599, and now another $100 off this week to $1499 makes it pretty hot. An extra $75 if it is in your GoldBox makes it 17% off from when it was released 2.5 months ago. The price drop to $1599 everywhere is part of a Nikon USA instant rebate and will only be good until sometime next month. The extra $200 off the lens makes it a good deal as well . . .
Historical: 07/29 Nikon announced the D300s with availability in August 08/27 Nikon D300s in stock and shipping at $1699 11/04 Price drop to $1599 at most places, $1575 @ Amazon 11/17 Down to $1499 (12% off MSRP) @ Amazon, or $1425 (17% off MSRP) if it is in your GoldBox

Well you can still get a D90. Thing about the D300/s that D90 doesn't have are: metal body; CF and SD dual card slots; 100% viewfinder coverage (versus 98%); faster burst frame rates; 51-points AF; self-claimed faster AF-speed but nobody saw any difference and the the "quiet" mode.
As for the rest in terms of tech specs, they are the same, 12.3MP DX sensor, dedicated Live View and Info buttons and such. Oh yes did I mentioned that D90 would weight less and cost almost half too?
Again, it's just my 2-cents.
P.S. honestly I am so close to pull the trigger to replace my D90 but after some consideration, I resisted.

This is good news. Should help pressure Canon to drop EOS 7D price to the same level soon...

Hmmm... interesting. I guess if you're 'PRO' anything with CF is still pretty standard. D90 would be nice too right now but the D200 is a recent purchase via the Bestbuy Deal ($600~ or so) and I'm pretty invested in CF cards at this point. Must. Resist.!!! Ehhh, I'll probably put my $$$ towards lens at this point. Maybe if the D300 gets to $600, I'll pick it up

Here's the deal. If you get one of those high speed SD cards, like the SanDisk Extreme III 8G SDHC I have, you don't have to worry too much about speed or running out of buffer, consider the speed of burst rate on the D90 (4 fps max), a Class 10 SD is more than enough. Let along the time for the lens and the body to focus if you are shooting moving subjects will drag you down.
On these high burst fps cameras such as the D300/s, a CF might be beneficial since the body is capable of filling up the buffer faster.
As for the noise performance, the D90 and D300/s are identical. On the other hand, D200 is acceptable but the D90/300/s are a significant improvement over the D200.
Or simply wait, save up money and go for a full framer instead. The rumors for D800 are floating around.

Yeah... I'm not really into the hobby to the point where I need to make the upgrade I think. The D200 takes nice pics fwiw. At this point, I really can't justify a major body upgrade seeing how I don't utilize the camera all that much as it is. Heh...
